Zavvi suspends game pre-orders as EUK bust bites

zavvi.jpg

Zavvi has suspended orders for games, films and music as it “unable to fully guarantee” the products will be delivered.

Woolworths-owned EUK, Zavvi’s main media supplier, entered administration last week.

“We have decided to suspend taking orders for these products while we work to resolve the situation and get back to normal,” Zavvi said in a statement on its site.

It came to light yesterday that EUK had failed to deliver copies of Resistance 2 to many major outlets in the UK.

EUK not delivering Resistance 2 to UK high street majors

resistance211.jpg

According to this GI story, something of a disaster may be on the cards for Resistance 2 in that EUK – the Woolworths-owned distributor that went into administration last week – has failed to deliver the game to UK high street stores.

Apparently Zavvi, WHSmith and Currys.digital are still awaiting their supply of the anticipated first-person shooter, originally released on Friday November 28.

A spokesperson from Deloitte, which currently serves as the administrator of EUK and Woolworths, said: “Since EUK went into administration, the administrators have either met or spoken with the majority of customers and suppliers and constructive talks are ongoing.”

Whoops. More through there.

Zavvi: Games may beat DVD within a year

Speaking to MCV, Zavvi CEO Simon Douglas has said that games my lead DVD in terms of sales in as little as a year.

“DVD still leads the way but games are catching up quickly,” he said.

“It is possible that games will eclipse DVD in a year, although if Blu-Ray progresses as the industry expects, then it’s maybe difficult for games to catch DVD in total. But it’s a nice battle to have to worry about.”

Douglas’s comments come after HMV boss Simon Fox said at the beginning of September that games may soon eclipse CD music sales at the retailer.

2007 was awesome for sales, say UK retailers

Here. Last year was a banner year for sales, as we all know, at the British majors aren’t afraid to crow about it.

“The range and innovation now available in the market is phenomenal, and customers are delighted by the choices now available to them,” said GAME commercial director Tricia Brennan.

Zavvi was a little more sedate, warning that innovation was needed to keep the dream alive.

“The whole industry from developers, to publishers to retail did a fantastic job in growing the market, but the industry cannot get complacent and must continue to innovate and capture consumers imagination – as there are more options for consumers to spend their entertainment pounds than ever before,” noted Patrick Kelly, Zavvi’s head of games.
