Sony gives break down of Home figures as it reaches 7 million users

Peter Edward, director of Home for SCEE, has broken down figures for the platform by region, demographic and content.
Without further ado, here it is courtesy of Gamasutra:
- Since launch in November 2008, Home claims to have 7 million users – of which 3 million are in Europe – who have downloaded 6 million items.
- Average Home session duration is 56 minutes, and while Sony expected 90 percent of its users to be 18-35 year-old males, the average is around 80 percent.
- During the three months leading up to the Watchmen film releases, 812,544 users watched an exclusive video with director Zack Snyder which amounted to 9.3 million minutes of view time. The Watchmen area of Home generated 3.2 million visits, and the Rorschach and Nite Owl costumes were downloaded 1.6 million times.
- 450,000 costumes were sold during the two-week Star Trek movie campaign, the video was watched 250,000 times.
- Red Bull’s Air Race game has been played by 873,136 users, which equals 2.5 million visits and 575,000 hours played with an average of 39 minutes spent on the game for the fist 5 months of launch. The game cost €110,000 to create with an estimated marketing value of €1.5 million.
- Users playing the Transformers puzzle games to net a free t-shirt for their avatars reached 125,000 with completion giving users a Trophy for their virtual spaces.

Killzone 2 demo now free to North American players… sorta

When Sony initially bequeathed unto U.S. gamers its first holy, zeal-inspiring slab of Killzone 2, only those who had pre-ordered the game were able to partake. However, after sensing a horrendous disturbance in the Sony defense force, it seems Sony decided to back down on its somewhat perplexing policy.
Well, kinda.
Starting at 6pm Pacific (9pm Eastern), a gaggle of Helghast soldiers will begin cavorting about PlayStation Home. When not checking out the latest Twilight trailers and performing carnal acts, they’ll be handing out a limited number of demo codes. Free demo codes.
You know what to do, we trust. Enjoy.

Home boss “amazed” at Second Life’s popularity
Speaking here, PlayStation Home’s creative director, Ron Festejo, has been less than friendly to Linden Labs’ Second Life.
“From my point of view, looking at Second Life – because it has been mentioned a lot in the same paragraph as Home, and people make that comparison – I’m amazed at how many people go on there,” he said, adding, “I think what we’ve done with Home is have the best-looking multiplayer world – and actually the most user-friendly that I’ve seen as well.
“We don’t have anything in there that’s appealing to that kind of geeky audience that you might find in Second Life.”
PlayStation Home, the free-to-use online world for PS3 owners, is being fully upgraded at the moment in time for a seemingly imminent launch.

Japanese Home survey rude awakening for Sony
A Famitsu survey which asked readers whether or not they’re interested in PlayStation Home has returned some less than positive results, according to this. The question, specifically, was, “What do you think about member services like PlayStation Home?” The answers will have the SCEJ kids sweating.
- 27.3 percent are interested in trying it out
- 37.3 percent don’t care
- 35.4 percent dislike such services
Maybe Home’s more suited to the west, then. Or not, as the case may. We like the look of it, anyway.

Home to reappear at GDC
GDC’s site has details of a seminar and demo of PlayStation Home, the virtual PS3 “space” thingy Phil Harrison debuted and the Californian show last year and was susequently delayed past an original autumn 2007 release date. It does all the things Xbox Live does but looks like an MMO, basically, although we doubt Sony will thank us for saying so.
“This presentation will cover an overview of the current Home Tools features and the feature roadmaps for the future,” said this. “Additionally we shall walk through the process of creating a space for Home and show a guide to creating 3D mini-games within the Home environments. Wrapping up we shall take a sneak peak at Home Interactive Item creation.”
Home was seen for the last time at E3 2007. We’re saying nothing apart from, “Hi Kaz!” Expect that demo to be rammed.
