SWTOR’s Gree in-game event returns next week
The ancient Gree starship, Gray Secant, is returning to Ilum May 21-28, and will provide SWTOR players with some nifty rewards such as unique armor, pets, weapons, and the like. Players will earn Reputation points has they “fight the Gree’s grand mission,” and players level 45 and over can jump into the event before it returns at level 55 in the future. GREE financials: net profit down 65% to ¥4.7 billion, new strategy moving forward

Gree and Yahoo Japan launch new social and mobile initiative
Mobile publisher Gree and Yahoo Japan have teamed up to open a new developer of social and mobile games, GxYz Inc. GamesIndustry reports the two companies began laying the foundation for the new developer in November 2012, and have fronted ¥200 million ($2.1 million) in capital. Gree holds 51% of shares in the new company, while Yahoo holds the remaining 49%. The board of directors is composed of two members of each company, and Gree’s Tomoyuki Isaka will act as CEO. Social network provider Gree is a major force in mobile gaming in Japan and is expanding operations in the west. It’s responsible for Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops.

GREE: mobile devs making 4x what they did 12 months ago
GREE knows mobile. After all it makes a lot of money in the sector worldwide, and SVP of studio operations Anil Dharni has stated that the company isn’t the only one reaping the rewards of the sector. He has stated in an interview that top mobile studios are raking in four times as much as it did this time last year.

Hitman: Absolution, Mass Effect 3 talks added to GDC 2013 schedule
GDC organizers have announced more programming and design sessions for GDC 2013. The first focuses on programming AI and NPCs in Hitman: Absolution, and will be hosted by IO Interactive’s Mika Vehkala and Maurizio De Pascale. A design track from BioWare’s Dave Feltham will discuss bringing narrative to Mass Effect 3, and finally, GREE’s Aaron Bannin will host a postmortem on Kingdom Age where he will discuss the use of data for “numbers, analytics,” and more. GDC 2013 runs March 25-29 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

OpenFeint to close next month, developers must go elsewhere
OpenFeint – the smartphone equivalent of Xbox Live – is to close in December according to current owner GREE. Developers currently using the service in their games will have to look elsewhere for achievement, friends list and leaderboard support. For the record, that’s a lot of games.

Gree, MadCatz, NetDragon Websoft join ESA
The Entertainment Software Association has announced Gree, the Japanese mobile/social developer, MadCatz, and online Chinese game company NetDragon Websoft Inc.have joined the trade body’s roster. This brings its total members to 34. “These new members are leaders in the breathtaking number of business models that exist to excite and reach today’s entertainment consumers,” said Michael D.
