Lionhead says public disclosure of development “backfired” during Fable I

Lionhead has stated that because of the way things were publicly handled during development of Fable I, the company had to change the way it involves people in the development process.
Promotion for Fable II was in jeopardy due to what the public considered “unfulfilled promises” with the first title, and Lionhead had to change that.
“It’s a shame that we can’t let people in on how games are developed to this degree anymore,” said Fable II creative director Dene Carter to 360 Magazine.
“The thing about Fable 1 was that we let people in on the whole development process, right from the beginning. We were more naive than anything else and hoped that our organic, blue-sky way of creating games would garner interest from the public.
“This rather backfired and we ended-up – in some cases – reading about certain features that we’d never even spoken about. The ‘acorn issue’ was a particular misquote. We never said the player could plant acorns.”
As a consequence, Lionhead’s now unable to involve the public as much it would like with current projects, which Carter called “a shame”.
“Everything has to be considered as a marketing statement,” he said. “People will hold you to any information they read as if they had read it on the back of the box.”

Lionhead’s professionalism saved staff from redundancies

Peter Molyneux told GI.biz that the reason Lionhead’s escaped layoffs in the current climate is due to professionalism and courtesy.
“We tried to be welcoming. So being professional, being nice to do business with, being super-passionate — when people come to look at saving money and where to direct their resources, it makes their decisions easier to take,” he said.
Being visionaries, creating best-selling franchise like Fable and having Microsoft as a publisher helps too.
“Our mission statement is to be the most respected developer in the world, and to create landmark games. And underneath that, to be the most professional studio in Microsoft Game Studios,” he continued.
“Part of that means that when we want to do something, we can’t throw our creative toys out of the pram and say, ‘Look, we want to do this because we’re really smart people.’ We have to prove it.
“We have to take the internal PR really, really seriously, and be really nice people to do business with,” said Molyneux.
“I know that sounds strange, but it’s so tempting when you’re acquired by another company – and this is what happened at EA, with Bullfrog – it’s so tempting to feel, ‘Well, they’re the big bad bosses, why should we try to open our doors?’

Molyneux: Lionhead working on projects “beyond” Fable

It’s GDC week. Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux’s kicked this off by dropping yet more hints of “landmark” projects beyond the Fable franchise.
“Lionhead stands for much more than just what Fable is, and we’re working on things beyond that,” he told Develop.
“We’re working on Fable things – we’ve just done the DLC and we are working on other stuff. But we’re also working on other innovational titles – and I’m not going to say title or titles, whether it’s a prototype or experiment, whether it’s near or far away – but I can say that what we’re always trying to do is create something that is meaningful.
“When we think why we want to do this, it’s because we want to make a landmark title.”
Peter’s speaking at GDC this week, and he’s already said he may announce his next game at the California show.
Expect to see muchose Molyneux quotes in the coming days.

Molyneux: Fable “burnt people’s lives”

Peter Molyneux has said he’s learned not to push his staffers too hard when making a game.
Speaking in an interview with Develop, Molyneux said that Lionhead basically “destroyed lives” while working on Fable, and he made sure not to make the same mistake with Fable II.
“If I’m honest, on Fable we just burnt people’s lives; we destroyed the team,” he said.
“Week after week, month after month, they worked 50, 60, 70, 80 hour weeks. It destroyed their lives and destroyed their marriages. You just can’t do that anymore.
“So looking back at Fable 2, yeah, we crunched at the end, but it was only at the very, very end that we used up people’s whole weekends. There’s a few exceptions, but a lot of Sundays this studio was empty, which I thought was great.”
In comparison, Molyneux says that Lionhead is now a much better place to work for. So hooray for that.
