Interview – FIFA 11′s David Rutter has the final word

The latest iteration of FIFA, EA’s biggest-selling videogame, launches this week, and dev lead David Rutter believes that, yet again, his team is about to win.
FIFA 10 was approaching 10 million sales at the last official count, and a host of streamlining additions, radical feature changes and the inclusion of goalkeeper play for the first time in the series’s history means that FIFA 11 will be “by far the better game” when compared to PES 11, according to Rutter.
The developer spoke to us on the phone from Vancouver to outline the reasoning behind this year’s FIFA version, defend Online Pass, admit he has no idea what’s going to make it into FIFA 12, and much more.

FIFA 11 chief: Online Pass offsets the “human cost” of multiplayer

The first inclusion of Online Pass functionality in a FIFA game doesn’t have the team “worried,” producer David Rutter has assured VG247, adding that making additional charges to those playing online with a secondhand copy is necessary to justify both the “human cost” of online development and improvements in the game’s multiplay service.

FIFA 11 could use Natal or Sony controller, but not because it “should”

FIFA 11 could end up using Natal and Sony’s motion controller, says series producer David Rutter, but not because people think it should be used.
“It’s funny. He (Peter Moore) said that and John Riccitiello said you’d never want Natal to control FIFA,” Rutter told Videogamer. “There are a few things we could do, which we’re thinking about doing at the moment. But it’s not something that’s suddenly going to manifest itself in FIFA 10.”
FIFA 11 then becomes a distinct possibility.
“I’m a big fan of, and I’ve said it a number of times and I’ll say it again, if it’s not good enough it won’t make it in,” he continued. “Don’t just want to put something in because it’s something we’re asked to do or it’s something people think we should.
“If it doesn’t add to the overall thing, then it’s pointless. I don’t want it to be just this distraction, to be quite honest. There are a few things we can do, definitely, but we’ve not really started on it yet.”

Don’t “bad-mouth EA”, says FIFA producer

FIFA producer David Rutter is sick of the EA hating. He wants it to stop, goshdarnit.
“It does upset me that people bad-mouth EA, and I used to be one of those people,” he told MCV.
“But the fact that I am allowed to spend so much money on making good gameplay, without having to do anything gimmicky, to me speaks volumes of the work Peter Moore and other people in the organisation are doing.”
You heard the man. Peace and love. More through there.
