Killzone: Mercenary reviews drop – get all the scores

Wednesday, 4th September 2013 08:17 GMT By Brenna Hillier

The review embargo for Killzone: Mercenary has lifted. Has Guerrilla Cambridge captured the spirit of its Amsterdam-based parent studio, despite squashing it down for the Vita?

Despite the late embargo (in terms of release date), not many scores have come through yet. At this stage, it looks like critics aren’t hating it, but there aren’t many of the high scores the core console releases have pulled in, and there’re some rather alarming numbers at the bottom of the pile if you’re an “eight or above” kind of gamer.

Past shooters like Unit 13, Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified and Resistance: Burning Skies have also failed to set the world on fire, despite it being touted as one of the handheld’s key genres,

Dave’s also been playing it and has assembled some thoughts on the matter.

All scores out of ten except where otherwise noted. See another score? Add it to the comments.

Killzone got a 34 from Famitsu. See the usual anti-portable prejudices are being bandied about in some of those reviews… VideoGamer played it a whole five hours – wow!

@5 – Yeah but apparently the campaign is only 4-5 hours so maybe not surprising?

So basically you have the “This game is amazing! It truly shows off what a FPS can be on a handheld! WOOOOO” vs the “Wow this game is horrible, it doesn’t satisfy my needs, its not original enough & the story sucks ass”

I kinda expected that. I never really looked towards Killzone for originality or a top notch story, its just a great solid shooter franchise. If you’re a heavy FPS fan, Killzone would probaby be a good fit for you. But if you’re looking for a FPS that’s more than just “shoot these 40 guys in the face & turn left”, you might want to shop around more, you’ll probably get bored easily

@14 You nailed it yeah. My write-up on the front page is an opinion blog rather than a review, because while I saw the game’s faults I do kind of get addicted to skill chaining mechanics like in Bulletstorm. So while it’s not the best shooter out there I still enjoyed it.

I’m picking this up almost purely for the fact that it appears to be the first truly competent FPS on the Vita, though I’m also won over by the graphics and the impressive MP action in the Beta. From what I can tell this is a straight-up system seller; non Vita-owners I showed the Beta to were all pretty impressed.

But why no KZ/Vita bundle Sony? This game was practically made to shift units.

I’m noticing a couple of trends with the low score reviews.
    1. They are mainly talking about the SP campaign that they’ve completed in 4 hours with very little mention of the replayability of each level.
    2. Some have compared a portable game to a home console game as if they were on the same level which allowed a true comparison. Metro even said something along the lines of “all portable games have to stand up to the test of being compared to a home console game”.

I think that reviewers have rushed to get their reviews online without playing the full version, including MP and thoroughly playing through the SP.

The online beta was fucking awesome and has made me fall in love with my PS Vita again. This game has been made extremely well despite the obvious limitations of the PSV. Joystiq, Metro and Edge are all jokers.
