Darkspore reinstated on Steam

Wednesday, 3rd July 2013 00:46 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Darkspore is once more available on Steam. The action RPG returned to Valve’s digital distribution service overnight. EA has not explained its temporary absence, which added fuel to speculation that support for the game had ended. EA has pish-poshed such talk, noting that Maxis recently corrected a nasty error.

    Well then.

All that said, I’m glad that this happened. Despite how much I despise the DRM, I can’t help but love the game, and I’d miss it if it were to disappear. There are very few things like it, and as someone who appreciates novelty and isn’t plagued by a normality fetish, I enjoy just how different it is.

Yeah, the DRM is bad. It’s undoubtedly horrible and I’d be the first to speak of its ills. But I can’t blame the game for that. Especially since I doubt there’s going to be anything else like Darkspore for a long, long time. I’m sure for some people that’s a good thing. Not so much for me.

I like the novel things. I wish we had more of them. We have a billion aesthetically dull games centered around very basic, very normal, very typical white straight cis male power fantasies… it doesn’t hurt to have some which aren’t designed to fit that demographic.

Looking at most games I can actually understand why women don’t game much. This isn’t one of the games responsible.
