Ryse still in development says Crytek, could miss 2013

Wednesday, 13th February 2013 12:54 GMT By Dave Cook

Ryse development is “Really shaping up well”, according to Crytek. The game was first revealed at E3 2011 and billed as a big core title for Kinect. It may miss 2013, which suggests that it could be going next-gen.

speaking with OXM, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli said, “We’re are on track with all our plans. The game is really shaping up well, but that’s pretty much all I can say at the moment.”

When asked if the game was still pegged for a 2013 release, Yerli replied, “I don’t know”, suggesting that it could slip to Microsoft’s next-gen hardware.

Allow us to jog your memory on this one. Here’s the Ryse reveal trailer:

It was SO OBVIOUS when this was revealed that it would miss this generation of Consoles, Kinect in its current state will simply render this tile unplayable. They need the improved next gen version for it to work. Despite all of this, I couldnt care less about anything Kinect related. It does not interest me one bit!

What has been proved time and again, is that character movement is just not workable with Kinect.

Kinect actually has a few good games, but they are designed around a static play area (Wrecketeer, Leedmees, Kinect Sports).

Attempts at traversal, like Rise of Nightmares, do not work.

If Crytek think this game will suddenly ‘work’ with higher resolution cameras in Kinect 2.0 then they fundamentally fail in understanding what makes Kinect games playable, and are doomed to repeat Rise of Nightmare’s abysmal failure.

Without a Move-like companion controller, Kinect is more a liability than an asset, especially if it is compulsory.

Edit: #2 Oh I must have missed that before. Hmmm, changes things a bit I guess..

I am afraid it will fail, like every other game that said it will focus on kinect as a core and make the impossible, like Rise of Nightmares and Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor.

It would have been better if Ryse was to focus on core gamers playing with a controller, since the idea was cool, like Gladiators and such.
