LEGO Lord of the Rings has received a PC demo that you can access now. Assemble your plastic fellowship now and get walking to Mordor.

The demo is available from the official LEGO homepage. The demo is compatible with Windows 7, XP and Vista but unfortunately not for Mac users.

Developed by Traveller’s Tales, the game is out across Europe from November 23rd on pretty much every format under the sun.

Here’s an official trailer:

I’ve watched the trailers and I poked the demo and I can honestly say…

This is quite frankly the worst LEGO game I’ve played in a while. It’s boring! I see the curse of Tolkien has racked it harshly, and there’s only a little of the fun and funny in there. It’s almost like they were afraid to besmirch the IP they were going for. It harks back to a lot of the ‘meh’ spectacle humour of the earlier Harry Potter games.

After LEGO Batman 2, this is a massive disappointment. I really hope that they’ll ramp things up for the next one. I can’t say I’m too surprised, though. Lord of the Rings puts me to sleep. It’s like the Michael Bay of fantasy. I can’t help but think that they would have had more success with a Hobbit game. They’re dealing with something that’s considered to be ‘epic’ and ambitious, here.

I think they deal better with games on a smaller scale. It’s disappointing, too, because Pirates of the Caribbean was pretty great, then LEGO Batman 2 was simply amazing. I feel bad for them. I hope their next IP is worthwhile.
