Hitman: Absolution – Saints level tweaked over controversy

Thursday, 16th August 2012 16:33 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

The Hitman: Absolution level with the sexy, PVC-clad nuns has been tweaked after the controversy the trailer depicting the level caused earlier in this summer.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Hitman: Absolution director Tore Blystad said the controversy which erupted over The Saints trailer forced the tweaks to the level the S&M-clad assassin’s are part of the game. Now, players will be given some context to the character before they go about killing the women.

“One way to go about that level is to go in all-guns blazing, but of course, it’s not the smartest way,” said Blystad. “We learned from the trailer that we really needed to give these characters some context and some backstory. We’re working within the game – within that level – to build these characters up before you meet them.

“That way you know what you’re getting and you aren’t put off by them.”

Blystad said the amount of publicity which followed after the trailer took the team by surprise.

“We were surprised by the reaction to it,” he said. “We’ve been trying to find out, y’know, how could we not see this happening? If we knew it would get such a negative reaction we would have done it in a different way.

“The game is inspired by Grindhouse-style movies, so for us the trailer was natural way to deal with that subject matter. We hope when people play it they have fun with it. The Saints fit into that somewhere, but it is a more extreme level in the game than others.”

Hitman: Absolution launches on November 20 for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Surely tweaking a sexy nun is against the law, if not then mortally wrong

That’s actually good to hear. If they are going to keep those ridiculous outfits, the least they could do is give us a better insight as to why they dress like that.

#2 You know i dont look to much into it, because man and woman, a portion of them, tend to be attracted by evil characters, thats why some people are atracted to criminals and/or killers, so for some people killers are sexy in nature, they have an extra appeal to them, therefore i dont mind this at all.

jeez i was sure the world stopped bitching about this.

    @3: Huh? I don’t see your point.

The problem i have with the stripper clothes is that they don’t make any sense what so ever. You can’t run with high heels, there is no body armor, and the tight latex rubber skirts sure don’t help with the movability either.

So if you have a band of nun strippers running around, you need a good reason for it. Otherwise it would be just stupid. And although the guy says that the Hitman series is Grindhouse, we all know that’s just not right. It never was, and nothing about Absolution hints at it being Grindhouse.

They need a good reason for the getup. Why would they choose to attract attention when they are actually supposed to be assassins? It pays off not to catch someone’s eyes when you’re on a hit. Why would anyone hire them?

Anyway, i’ll hold my judgement until i’ve seen the level.

#5 well i meant becuase it will pleasing to the eyes of some people, beautifull lady killers in sexy outfit, they wouldnt need a reason for that, they will like either way, because they are attracted to that in real life, that was my point, they think criminals and killers are sexy, therefore they portrait them as such, not that is my fancy, but i reckon it will be for some people, but i agree with you, just that i dont mind it to much, because i know they have some targeted people with this, thats all.

Fuck sake, developers have to stop responding to fan criticism.

@9 I think what he’s trying to say is “Whiners gonna whine, designers gotta design”.

At some point developers have to stand up for their craft, instead of cowering the second someone runs an indignant article online.

It’s just one kneejerk reaction begetting another one.

Not that it’s neccesarily a bad move in this case, but it’s just too easy to bully those guys.

Exactly. Games shouldn’t change based on fan reaction. They definitely shouldn’t change after release (ME3).

@10: Funny that you mention ME3, as the new ending is much better than the previous shit-stain we have had before.

Another good example is the fan reaction to inFamous 2, where SuckerPunch suddenly decided to change Cole to a completely new character. And by completely new character i mean Nathan Drake.

They changed it after the negative reaction and rightfully so. While the redesign wasn’t bad, SuckerPunch had gone way too far. From the voice, to the face, to the hair color. Everything was different.

I think it’s also important to note that SuckerPunch kind of sucks when it comes to design. Especially character design. Most of their character look just horribly out of place.

So far there are only two fan reactions that i simply can not support, the DMC crybabies and the Witcher 2 Fans.

At one point in the development process of Witcher 2, Geralt looked like a very handsome Witcher, but they changed it multiple times, because fans thought that the ladies man wasn’t ugly enough.

I also think that most of the people who complained about the stripper nuns aren’t fans of the series. Don’t see how adding more depth to the characters makes it a bad thing.

So the fans of a game featuring the genetic clone of the DNA of multiple mass murderers, all of a sudden need the game to make sense?!

Ok. Your a dweeb, playing a videogame and the guys actually making it, thought these sexy nun killer woman looked cool.

Obviously they forgot the need to be right on pc about it, but they also assumed the fans might have the level of maturity to realise how tongue in cheek it was.

    Silly devs.

This looked massively misplaced from the start, but I sorry to see them having to change it if it truly was their artistic vision from the get go….

(although, it was most likely a PR stunt to create publicity that they had no intention in including these Charecters in this way in the final game…)

Viral viral viral… Making advertising that much more annoying…

It is really hard to tell, it all depends on the mission they’re in. For example in Blood Money there is a level filled with bikini and topless women, in a snowy mountain. I don’t remember anyone getting mad about that, at least not at the same level as this trailer was the cause of…
