Quick quotes – Wii U is “definitely more powerful than 360 and PS3,” says 5th Cell

Friday, 13 July 2012 19:24 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

“[Wii U is] definitely more powerful than Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It’s kind of frustrating to see the rumours and speculation of people going back and forth saying it’s weaker or more powerful. It’s definitely more powerful. I think we were one of the first developers to see the Wii U.” – 5th Cell CEO Jeremiah Slaczka in the latest issue of Game Informer, via D’toid.

Time will tell, the games will speak for themselves. I just hope they look good, and are fun to play. I don’t need Hollywood CGI Pixar Studios graphics. I am more concerned about how they play. And looking very much forward to getting my hands on that control pad.

    @Kap yep. Happens a lot Vita > 3DS(powerwise) doesn’t help them either.

So long as there are Nintendo games on a platform, I will own that platform. Power has nothing to do with it for me. I just like fun games.

I am with you that its about the games but the issue with Nintendo’s consoles is that you end up waiting 6-9 months waiting for another release of nintendo game since 3rd party doesn’t make games for their consoles specifically the Wii even the 3ds has the same issue. The WiiU so far from 3rd party will have games that will be released long before the WiiU launch.

Nintendo’s games alone will not be enough for core gamers to pick up the console especially with no support for online capabilities or 3rd party just making ports for the console. Why get a WII U when I just keep playing the games on 360, PS3 or PC? Nintendo’s exclusives are not enough to chuck $300+ especially with next gen around the corner.

Nintendo would save everyone a lot of trouble if they just revealed the machine’s specs.

Not that they matter all that much, but it would definitely end a lot of really stupid and petty arguments.

@9_i think this will change. i really believe there will be much more third party support this time. for sure. even without knowing the detailed specs it´s kind of obvious that the wiiu will be close or on par or maybe even slightly “better” powerwise than ps360, ports will probably be pretty easy.

lack of games: i cannot catch up with all the great 3ds games. seriously. if the wiiu will follow that trend i will be a poor man very soon. i buy tons of 3ds games and they all have been great fun. i love the 3ds by the way. it is a great machine. it really starts to get a place in my most beloved gaming machines of all time hall of fame.

I doubt the WiiU will be as successful as the Wii. Why get a system that has the same games as the 360 and Ps3 and will be utilized on those systems? Along with the system most likely being more expensive then then current systems. You think Sony or MS are going to have the current price when WiiU comes out? Doubt that. Wii had something special and that was the motion controls now with tablets, smart phones, Xbox Glass, even the PS Vita can be utilized to do the same thing as the WiiU capabilities. WiiU has little to nothing to grab as being innovative with the current market. With next gen around the corner I doubt that gamers will be flocking to it like they did with the Wii. Especially if the documents of MS reports are true and that the next gen console will be going at a reasonable price point to compete with the WiiU.

    #14 3 years ago
  15. polygem

@14: i don´t think so. sure wii had something special with motion controls, but in the end that was just the door opener, the games made the console what it is. i can play a lot of games with my girlfriend on the wii. she is not a gamer, not at all, but helping me out in mario galaxy by holding off enemies with the wiimote or playing kirby epic yarn (you cannot die in this game so there is zero frustration) for a while is something she can really enjoy. she´s also pretty good in mario kart. this only works with nintendo games. believe me. i tried. and this is something not only i experience. sony and ms try so hard to achieve this too but they yet have to beat nintendo in the family friendly gaming department…and i doubt they will find the secret recipe. there are no games on the 360 or ps3 that we could enjoy together. BUT i can see myself already playing mario kart wiiu with her -one playing on the tablet the other on the tv screen /no split screen needed! or the other great stuff they already showed for the tablet. sure there will be smart glass too but i really doubt my gf wants to scan some forerunner corpses for me in halo or use the hammer of smart glass dawn in gears or whatever they will use it for…

My wife and I play various games on the PC, consoles and smart phone and she never played games before meeting me. Just need the right game for that and there are plenty of Downloadable titles that make games quite easy to get into. Nintendo is not the only one doing this.

    #16 3 years ago
  17. polygem

it´s not the same. at least in my experience. those nintendo games are just so much easier to pick up and play for total non gamers. mario galaxy really is a great example. the second player just points the wiimote to slow down enemies and pick up star pieces. it´s more like watching someone else playing a game and interactiveley helping out a bit. a 5 year old could do that – still it is great gaming time together, because the other player still has a challenging gaming experience. there´s also a certain charme, artstyle, music etc etc. i am not saying that only nintendo does this but the so called “casual” (i hate that term) gamer is not as informed as you and i and wont be able, or doesn´t want to look around and find cool games by looking up reviews and stuff or whatever and then buy them and check them out……..that´s why they buy the wii/wiiu…they can pick up and play. imo it´s great because there really is something for everyone. the hc and the casual.

I was with ya PB, up till the last paragraph:

“Nintendo’s games alone will not be enough for core gamers to pick up the console especially with no support for online capabilities or 3rd party just making ports for the console. Why get a WII U when I just keep playing the games on 360, PS3 or PC? Nintendo’s exclusives are not enough to chuck $300+ especially with next gen around the corner.”

I think, surface level here, your putting too much importance on Core gamers. Nintendo games(Wii) have this gen sold extremly well, placing them in the top ten sales more times then any other publisher(3rd party or not). So while core games are important, and core gamers will matter, someone has been buying those Nintendo games. Sales are sales, it doesn’t matter what demographic or label they are. Companies just wanna sell their games.

I can make an argument(actualy thought about doing so in forums, but figure that would get flamed rather then debated) that focusing on and sometimes forcing games online has hurt game integrety, watered down experences, blended/boiled down distinctivness between games and ultimatly hurt sales. Again surface level here, but Wii didn’t have a strong online presence and yet its games sold Millions. Repeatidly. Long story short here, I think Online is an integeral part of some games and very important to the players that play them, ie CoD, but I don’t think they are tantemount to selling games. I think there is a large space(void?) left by MS and Sony focusing on online.

As far as why a core gamer would pick up a WiiU when they could just get a PS4 or xbnxt? They prolly wouldn’t. And that is why you won’t see Nintendo going out of their way to invest in the same kinds of game experiences that Sony and MS covet. Your not going to see an OMP FPS staring Mario and friends.

I think Nintendo exclusives are more then enough reason to buy a Nintendo system. I love their games. My kids used to love their games, went through that phase where nintendo just wasn’t cool, and have scince come back to enjoying Nintendo games as they have matured. I honestly think a lot of the Nintendo hate comes from a certian crowd(not pointing fingers, esp at PB, I know your married) but I would ball park their ages between 15 and 25(maybe late 20s). The reason, I think, is because they take their games so serioursly. And tend to identify themself(and judge others) on the games they play. I don’t do that. I would hope most of us don’t, and can enjoy a game for the merrits of the gameplay and not how much skin, language or blood it has. That is why I love Nintendo games, the great gameplay. They are fun.

I have owned(and still do own) every Nintendo system ever made, including the VBoy. I can not imagine not owning one. Would just feel wrong to me. As far as waiting months inbetween releases? Thats ok. And heck people do that now. 12 months inbetween CoD releases, FIFA, or inbetween stuff like Gears or uncharted or LBP. I don’t see much difference. Besides, you can always own more then one system.

I am also hoping that WiiU will cost less then 300usd. Really hoping for less then 250usd. But I figure it will be somewhere in that area. Just gotta remember I spent 600usd on my PS3, and 500usd on xb360(and had to replace that three times). I am cool with 300usd or less for a new Nintendo system.

Like I said I will still play most of my games on PC(just like I do now). But a PC and WiiU sound like a great combo to me.

    @20 tl;dr

I know that this console will be good. A lot of ppl were sceptical about the Wii (including me), but it has games for every taste. So the same for the Wii U. And as a “real” videogamer I dont give a fuck about graphics.

“Nintendo games(Wii) have this gen sold extremly well, placing them in the top ten sales more times then any other publisher”

Worked for the first few years but their hardware sales have severely dipped after the first two years.

“but figure that would get flamed rather then debated) that focusing on and sometimes forcing games online has hurt game integrety, watered down experences, blended/boiled down distinctivness between games and ultimatly hurt sales. ”

    Halo,Gears,COD, L4D, Portal 2, ME3 would disagree with you.

“I think Nintendo exclusives are more then enough reason to buy a Nintendo system. I love their games. My kids used to love their games, went through that phase where nintendo just wasn’t cool, and have scince come back to enjoying Nintendo games. ”

Good for you but on the flipside I can tell you that in my house that Nintendo didn’t cut it for us and we went with Kinect and have enjoyed the games offered through that more immensely meaning the 360 gets utilized more so than the Wii which collected dust until the next Nintendo release. Thats when I decided to chuck the system and sell it.

“And heck people do that now. 12 months inbetween CoD releases, FIFA, or inbetween stuff like Gears or uncharted or LBP. ”

Yeah they do but the great thing about the 360,PS3 and PC is they can go on the digital stores and play something to tie them over until the next release where the Wii they get the choice of playing the same game or older games.

    #22 3 years ago
  23. OlderGamer

Pretty one sided slant there PB.

For the past seven month yoy numbers have been down across the board. The best point I can give you is that Nintendos Wii games started sliding before that point, saleswise. But again, so have a lot of gamesales.

Ok PB, without being privy to NPD sales charts we have to scrap for numbers:

    Best selling Halo:
    Halo 3: 10.5M sold.
    XB360 series total(22.5M)

    Best selling Gears:
    Gears of War: 5Million sold.
    XB360 series total(13Million)

    Best selling CoD:
    Call of Duty; Blops: 12Million
    XB360 series total(26.5Million)

L4D, Portal 2, and ME3 aren’t even on the XB360 top sales list.

The top selling xb360 game: Kinect Adventures: 18Million sold.

    Nintendo.

    Wii Sports: 79Million.
    Mario Kart Wii: 32Million.
    Wii Sports Resort: 30.1Million.
    Wii Play: 28Million.
    NSMBWii: 26Million.

    WiiFit: Best selling game:
    WiiFit: 22.6Million
    Wii series total: 43.1Million(includes Plus).

For Sonys sake I won’t list their numbers the ame way. Their top seller was 7.4Million.

I did this list because the games you listed, while house hold names amoung core gamers, don’t match up. If Blops were on a Wii, it would rank 8th. If Halo 3 were on Wii it would rank 10th.

Keep in mind that I never said online gaming was bad. Or shouldn’t exsist. I think it is important. But it isn’t the definitive reason all game buyers buy games. And, I don’t believe for one second that WiiU will be hurt because MS or Sony have more robust online offerings.

Lastly, the Wii had more games then just VC games. No where near the level of PC, MS or even Sony. But to say they offered nothing but old games is silly. And besides I really liked having some of those old games to play.

Oh … the link with the numbers:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games#Xbox_360

I know it will never be complete. But it is the best we can come up with. That I can find.

    #23 3 years ago
  24. Phoenixblight

All those games you listed for the WIi number(which were not warranted) have a multiplayer component which is the online aspect of the games I listed.

I was not comparing one console to another on your online comment about it making games worse so that was not needed or relevant for that argument.

    #24 3 years ago
  25. OlderGamer

There is a big difference between same room co-op and online play tho.

My point was that despite a less focus online with Wii, Nintendo sold very well last gen. I was speaking towards that validity. I just don’t think Nintendo will lose ground due to someone else offering online gaming. Esp scince WiiU is going to have a bigger online presence this gen.

    #25 3 years ago
  26. Phoenixblight

    @25

All we know about WiiU online support is that Nintendo will be giving it to the publishers to do their own thing unlike the PSN or XBL. WHich means that the publishers will have to put their own online system for their games which they won’t do when the 360 and PSN have a much easier way of doing it.

“There is a big difference between same room co-op and online play tho.”

Except most of those games had an online component like Mario Kart, it just had stringent way of getting to that online aspect of those games.

    #26 3 years ago
  27. Clupula

You want to know what game I’ve actually turned non-gaming women into people who will actually sit there, in one case, for the eight hours it took her to beat the game? Heavy Rain.

On four occasions, I’ve asked a girl who didn’t play games to give it a shot, by the time it gets to the title screen, they’re hooked.

It doesn’t have to be a casual little kiddie-Nintendo game to get a non gamer into it. It just has to be something that they can play without having to worry about skills and points and all that sort of thing.

    #27 3 years ago
  28. OlderGamer

Pretty sure that from the list, only Mario Kart played online.

    #28 3 years ago
  29. Clupula

Your entire list is party games and shit that Oprah pushed to soccer moms. None of it are actual games, with the exception of Mario Kart. Most of the stuff you listed people bought and then stuff in their closet after a day.

    #29 3 years ago
  30. Phoenixblight

Huh thought they all had a online aspect I know Smash Bros did. Anyways if those games did it would open the doors more so since those games are driven by multiplayer.

    #30 3 years ago
  31. OlderGamer

I can agree with that PB, those games could benifit from being online, well maybe not THOSE games. Hard to imagine how Wii Fit would have been online. But alot of Nintendo frnachises that have had strong co-op in the past could work really well online.

that is what I expect Nintendo to focus on online with WiiU. Maybe online co-op star fox or Pokemon or something. I doubt very much Nintendo is going to even think about making a play for gamers like Clupula. Just not what they do.

I think the Wii-u will do well for the big Nintendo fans like Oldergamer, for those on the fence like myself, or people that bought the Wii and then barely used it, not so much..

All the multi-console owners I know that bought a Wii barely use it except for parties or friendly get togethers. A few people i know that only own a Wii, Their kids wanted it and as they have grown up they use the PS3, PC or 360 much more.

The sad fact is that none of the people that currently own one are dying to get their hands on a Wii-u. I think this is a problem for Nintendo. The Wii became the hot new thing for non-gamers to buy, and they bought in droves. I hate to say it though, Most of the Wii-fit owners i know are still fat and never use it.

Recently, I actually had to tell a self-proclaimed Wii fan (not a heavy gamer) what a Wii-u is. They had never heard of the Wii-u. They dont read gaming sites and had no idea.. They said they would wait on getting a new console..

    @OG,
Are you done with wii. What happened to “the only true games company” previous generation (gamecube) or the generation before that (n64).Sorry, but wii was definitely a one off. Motion controls on wii are enough for casual gamers who dont need to any other console ,let alone wiiu. And wii had the most shovelware out of 3 consoles. Also 3rd party games sell the worse on wii, fact. Ask any major pub and that would be the answer.
So in other words, 3rd party will only give a 3rd grade support to ninty and wiiu. If you want mario, zelda, buy ninty consoles. For everything else, look elsewhere (sony and ms).

@culpa: that “nintendo is kiddie stuff” thingy makes you look really wild billy childish yourself tbh. mostly nintendo complainers do not own a nintendo system, they watch some youtube gameplay footage and then pretend to know how a game plays…there are kids games on ninty platforms but there are also games that are HC and casual at the same time (mario galaxy coop), and truly truly epic hc games – skyward sword – many will even say a game like skyward sword is a kiddie game because it´s not dark enough artworkwise…well that´s not even scratching the surface and there is no need to argue with this breed of gamers i guess.

@krazyKraut: indeed. i owned several nintendo systems before the wii, but this motion control stuff made me very sceptical and i did not buy a wii for a long time…then i did and i thought to myself i must have been insane! i cannot imagine a gaming life without nintendo games. i love shooters, i am a big halo fan, i love many of the sonys ip´s too but the biggest smile on my face i get when i hear a zelda or mario tune and start to explore those worlds. there´s nothing i can do against it.

@35: indeed there are lots of third party nintendo exclusives all the time. this month alone: theatrhythm ff and rhythm thief, these are no nintendo games (square and sega) but exclusive to a nintendo platform…
that said: i sold my 3ds already and wait for the xl to release, those two games just arrived in the mail yesterday and i have to wait until july 28…i could cry.

  39. Clupula

It’s actually fairly sad that when you bring up third party Nintendo titles, you can only really mention 3DS titles, because there aren’t Wii titles to talk about. Name ten third party exclusives from the last year that showed up on the Wii. Nintendo know how to get people to buy portable systems, but they have no idea what they’re doing on consoles. The only people who are going to buy a Wii U are those who live and breathe Nintendo. The casuals are not going to be interested anymore and the hardcore gamer is certainly not interested in it.

Nintendo really should just scrap the whole thing and start from scratch with an actual next gen system, one that will be able to compete with the PS4 and the Next Box.

@39: i really cannot see how anyone dares to call him/ or herself a “harcore” gamer but is not playing zelda, mario and metroid games. to me being a HC gamer means to “live and breathe” games in general…mainstream, so called “mature” shooting games are the so called HC games these days while in fact those games are much more kids games than any zelda game is…the kids are just getting their brains washed pretty good with this hc gamer marketing bullshit, mainly forced by ms and pleasently adapted by sony. they target the group that og named. the mostly male 15 to late 20 ones.
clupula, the wiiu obviously isn´t for you. that´s ok, but it is pretty arrogant to say the wiiu should be like you want it to be. to me the wiiu looks very promising and i cannot wait for it – i believe it will become a huge success because it will have more third party support as well as those first pary nintendo gems and it will have the tablet controller, which will allow me to have a great coop gaming experience. nintendo is king in local coop and i cannot wait for the cool stuff they will come up with for it. i really don´t think nintendo needs a true “next gen system” why should they? there will be ps4 and the next xbox. i am so happy that nintendo is having a different approach. this is a good thing. it is good for gamers and for the game industy in general.
the wii opened the door for many casual gamers that bought a wii and started to enjoy games. many of those are having a ps3 or 360 too these days, because they fell in love with gaming thx to nintendo. in the end i really do believe nintendo is good for sonys and ms´s sales too ;)

    @35,
About MH, in fact I am 100% sure it will release on vita, maybe not 4.
Also MH is available on ps3, so what are you talking about?
Wii had the X-factor with motion gaming, which has now gone obselete years ago. 2 screens is the most shitty idea ever implemented.
Sorry ninty, but with 2 eyes I can only focus on 1 screen at one time.
And also if graphics dont matter, then why is ninty so shy about wiiu specs. Smells fishy.
If more powerful means 0.6556456454% more powerful than this gen then I am afraid that phil harrison was right, the only major 3rd party support wiiu will get will be the ports of games from the last 7 years catalog of ps3 and 360.
Out of all 3rd party games shown at e3, most shouts were for me3, a game available on ps3 and 360 for months. That says it all.

This whole discussion about power is bassicly build around the vision, that all the consoles are the same and should attract the same kind of gamer. But todays gamer description is more fluitly. From Hardcore, to casual and the new buzz-word mid-core or what other names the industry will create. People play many kinds of games on many types of devices with many types of genres.

The Wii U wont be like the next PS4, like the next Xbox wont be like one of the other two. The Wii u will bring a different type of gaming. Of course this doesnt means everythin will be great. But on the other side all wont be bad either. It will be just different…and imo thats good for me.

PS: For people thiking more power means better graphics..this is not the whole truth. Just take a look at the amazing artist working in the industry and their portfolios (even the low poly work!). If you have time you can make wonderfull looking assets…but with game development time isnt always on your side ;)

  48. Clupula

40 million? Really? You’re forgetting that probably a good 75% of thoe sales are from people who never played a game in their lives and never played one after. The attach rate for the Wii has been awful. Look it up. Then you’ve got people who bought a Wii, felt burned, and are not going to buy another Nintendo system.

Do I think the Wii U is going to flop in sales and sell 2k systems? Of course not. I think it’ll probably clear a million sales very quickly because of the diehard Nintendo fans and those who just have to have everything that’s new.

However, unless they start showing some solid third party exclusives, and not two-three year old ports of games you can already get on the PS3/360, the only people who are going to want Wii U’s are going to be the people who buy them at launch. I can foresee this being like the PS3′s launch, all over again. Strong launch and then just nothing until the third parties come in. And unless Nintendo do some heavy duty wheeling and dealing, I don’t see those third parties coming to the rescue.

And for the record, I have played Nintendo titles. I owned an NES. It got me back into console gaming after the crash (My first console was a Colecovision). I love Mario 3. But the SNES didn’t impress me as much as the Genesis did, the N64 was a joke compared to the PS1 (and even the Saturn…I mean…cartridges?!? Really?), the Gamecube only had the RE titles and Eternal Darkness going for it, and the Wii just seemed like Nintendo had given up on the hardcore audience, so they took a gamble and aimed for the soccer moms.

While I know many like to buy into the Miyamoto Kool-Aid, the fact is that all Nintendo have done since they lost rare was just shit out sequels to the same tired franchises over and over again. And yes, they are kiddy franchises. As bad a system as it was, at least during the N64 days, it had appeared, with Rare, that Nintendo realized their fans were growing older and it was time to start giving them more mature titles.

Then once Rare was picked up by Microsoft, it was back to the same shit they always did. Mario. Zelda. Mario Kart. Rinse. Repeat.

And yes, I also give Microsoft shit for the constant Halo games. I’d give Sony shit for the Ratchet & Clank series, but no one gives a fuck about that franchise, anyway. And Sony do make up for it with the most first party innovation and new IP’s, so I can deal with them ridiculously milking one franchise.

@49: Iam not sure if I get you right, but if you’re talking about software sales your wrong. If you look at the tie ratios for eacht 7th generation console they are surprsingly close together: Wii 8.5, PS3 8.9 and the 360 in the US 8.9 (for the Xbox there are only stats from north america, and if you put in a worldwide context it could be less).
So every console sold almost the same amount of software.

    Uh…no, no, they didn’t.

Look at those numbers. Nintendo has the lowest attach rate, but the most hardware sold. That’s not a good sign and it doesn’t mean they sold the same amount of software.

If it sold the most, in total, it should be far beyond the attach rate of the PS3 and 360.
