Tony Hawk: Everything but FPS is “kind of struggling”

Tuesday, 17th April 2012 01:42 GMT By Brenna Hillier

It’s “super tricky” to sell anything but shooters nowadays, Tony Hawk has said.

Speaking to IGN, Hawk said the industry had doubled-down on blockbusters since the late 90′s, when his own games were part of the big leagues.

“When our game was hitting really hard there were roughly 10-15 top games that were go-tos. Now there are only three or four that are the standard,” he said.

“If you’re not a first-person shooter at this point you’re kind of struggling. If you’re not Call of Duty, you’re not Halo, it’s super tricky out there.”

That’s why Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD is trying something new.

“Now we can do it as digital content and make it that much less expensive. We’re releasing this game for $15, which is totally unheard of for a big franchise game,” Hawk said.

If successful, the new game will overcome the fact that “the skate genre is almost nonexistent” and bring it back into the limelight.

“The dream for me is to release this as the base line for other best-of levels, but mostly so we can set a foundation and release new stuff,” Hawk added.

“[In a few years] I would love to still be here and take advantage of new consoles as they come,” Hawk said, “including Wii-U and whatever else they have in the pipe.”

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD, which is a kind of best of compilation of early games, is due on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in July.

@3 I heard SSX was fairly good, although I’ve never played any of them including the new one myself. And the old Tony Hawk games… man oh man… those memories :’)
