Guild Wars 2: ArenaNet’s MMO Manifesto put to video

Saturday, 10th March 2012 19:20 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

ArenaNet has released a video which features the team discussing its Game Design Manifesto for Guild Wars 2. According to the developers, when creating the MMO, it had three main themes to adhere to: making an MMORPG a great RPG, rethinking combat, and making the MMO more social. You can watch it for yourself below, or if you would rather read about it, the Manifesto has been posted on the official site since 2010. You should still watch it, though. The next closed beta is scheduled for later this month and the game will be released this year.

This is a really old video, really old. But it’s still a good one! And it’s nice that it’s being shown off again.

There are a few things in this video which still get me.

The taiko drumming-like music that they also used for the Black Citadel. I don’t know what it is about Japanese drum music, but it really gets the blood pumping. It’s incredible stuff, even by its own merits.

There needs to be more drum music in games, really. It’s a pity that it’s such an overlooked and under-appreciated genre.

The Shatterer landing scene still gives me shivers. The way they orchestrated that was incredible, and I can see myself spending a lot of time in the scar in Guild Wars 2. If there’s one thing I love and admire about the charr – it’s that they’re very selfless. Duty and orders first, legion and warband before person.

And that tends to make them more than a bit badass, because if it’s their order to protect someone, even if it’s someone they didn’t particularly like, then a charr would face down and eventually defeat waves of foes in order to fulfil their duty. Whereas most others would simply flee in terror.

@1 Strange. Wonder why they just posted it to the Tube yesterday then?

No idea! But I’m not pulling your leg, honest.

Check the date of that video. That’s also the manifesto.

What you have there is possibly an updated/edited version thereof, possibly. But the original Manifesto video has been around for a long time.

Looking at it, it seems to be a slight edit of the original, I think. They haven’t changed a lot, though.

@3 Oh well then, I will leave it – small edits or no – people need to be psyched for this. :)
