Vatra finds Downpour comparisons to Alan Wake “a bit odd”

After Komani released the latest set of screenshots for Silent Hill: Downpour, a lot of folks compared the eerie atmosphere depicted in them to Alan Wake, and the game’s producer Devin Shastky finds this “a bit odd.”

Speaking with Hell Descent, Shastky said enough hasn’t been seen of the game yet to warrant such comparisons.

“I think it’s a bit odd for anyone who hasn’t even seen the game to be drawing comparisons to any other games,” he said. “They can only judge from the screenshots they’ve seen, so I don’t blame them. If they think we are looking ‘Alan Wake-ish’ just because we have a forest area in part of the game, then so be it. But it could easily be said that Alan Wake ripped off SH in a number of ways with the look and feel of their entire game. Granted, all games evolve from each other in some capacity, so I think its narrow minded to think like that.”

Shastky also pointed out that Downpour has more environments than Alan Wake, and feels these comparisons will end with the forest shots.

“There are a multitude of other environments in Downpour that people will be hard-pressed to compare to ANY other games, we have a very unique variety of landscapes and interiors, and I think the fans will be very pleased with the job Vatra is doing on our environments,” he said. “The forest is just a drop in the bucket (pun intended) of where we take the player in this game.”

Silent Hill: Downpour is slated for a fall release on PS3 and Xbox 360.

What a toad. It’s not odd you ignoramous, all we know are the screenshots and they clearly look similiar to Alan Wake. Dumb ass.

Don’t talk about the environment that “seem” to be similar. One of the things Alan wake didn’t have was actual creative monsters. I mean shadow monsters, really? I was more scared of Garbage Pail kids than I was of that nonsense. Also Silent Hill is rated M which gives it bump of what it can do as a horror survival game vs Alan wake action theme.

People are exaggerating, the previous SH games have sucked, but i doubt this will reach Alan Wake levels of suckery. :P

No but seriously, the guy is right in that people are just seeing forests in both games and coming to that conclusion.

^ Exactly. Cause that’s all we know or have seen. The pics they’ve shown look like Alan Wake. That’s where the “comparisons” are coming from. The pics released, not the games…

    Ummmm….really, what’s so hard to understand here…

I find it odd that he finds it odd. It’s pretty common sense really.

As a massive Silent Hill fan, I am very glad these people are taking all criticism into account (even from pre release screen shots). It makes me think that when they said “We want to make another good Silent Hill game, like 1 and 2″ they meant it, and I really hope they do.

#4 I think what Shastky is reacting to is not nuanced statements like “based on the few screenshots I’ve seen, SH:DP’s visual style resembles Alan Wake’s”, but rather comments along the lines of “OMG they’re TOTALLY ripping off Alan Wake why why why give us back Team Silent” etc.

Not that the last part of that statement is such a weird thing to wish for.

^ Its hard to say that Downpour is ripping off AW, when AW is pretty much a a SH rip off in itself…

A childish rip off like Goosebumps vs Stephen King….

Pretty much only similar because the main characters are both random white dudes wearing shitty clothes in rainy/wooded environments…Alan Wake was a pretty decent game though, it was something different while Silent Hill has been over-used way too much, maybe this one will actually be a good game

And quite getting so damn defensive about it guy, if Alan Wake ripped off Silent Hill then Silent Hill ripped off Resident Evil

Silent Hill is not a rip off from Resident Evil not even close thats like saying Poltergeist ripped off Night of the Living Dead.

@9: Then RE ripped off Alone in the Dark. Wait, that one makes actually sense.
