Hulst: Killzone 3 is Guerrilla’s first “veteran” project

Monday, 21 March 2011 00:17 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Speaking of progress between titles, Guerrilla Games co-founder Herman Hulst said Killzone 3 was the studio’s first offering as a veteran developer.

“We always had an extremely junior team compared to some of the competition that had very veteran teams, usually US-based,” Hulst told Gamespot.

“This was the first time we were actually able to do a project where the vast majority was veteran game developers, and that makes a big difference.

“You require fewer people to come up with new things and to develop through with the required level of polish. That was probably the single biggest change for us–to have that team ready.”

Hulst commented that having Killzone 2′s base to work from aided Killzone 3s development markedly.

“Initially we actually said, ‘Let’s not even go too deeply into technological improvements. Let’s focus on the variety. Let’s theme every level nicely and differently.’

“I think one of the biggest gains over Killzone 2 was that it has such different environments, pacing, and gameplay–that’s what we wanted to focus on initially. And, just the guys that we have on the team, they started developing, optimizing, and finding new ways to create more variety and more feature-driven gameplay.”

Veteran developers of shitty games like Shellshock Num, Killzone 1 and killzone 2?

Wow…. Just WOW… So important. No one cares already… Killzone 3 is 80+ on meta with ok graphics on consoles, with bad story campaign, nice multiplayer component with less then 1 million sales for now.

Interesting, what great veteran devs will do next? Killzone 4? ROFLMAO

…you see why people here call you a troll? You may have a PS3, but when you see the words “PS3″ on a article title you quickly comment on it to write your retard nonsense. Can you please grow up and learn how to say you don’t like something in a mature way? In other words, grow the fuck up kid (oh, and if you are not a kid, then wow, you need help).

“you quickly comment on it to write your retard nonsense”

Of course it’s retarded nonsence. Everything with what you don’t agree is obviously a “retarded nonsence”.
So is it a nonsence that Guerilla created bad games like shellshock Num or Killzone 1 or that Killzone 3 is 80+ on metacritic? I think not.

“Can you please grow up and learn how to say you don’t like something in a mature way? In other words, grow the fuck up kid (oh, and if you are not a kid, then wow, you need help).”

I don’t get it. So i need to grow up or i need some help? Make up your mind already! Damn it… These kids.

Seriously Erthazus! I haven’t seen you write anything positive about a game in ages. I will give it to you that you do give alot of praise to PC games, but the ones you do praise are miles away from launch and you end up hating those games too. Why do you even bother with gaming if you hate absolutely every game that comes out? You’re never happy.

GG needs to step up their game! Killzone 3 was really a let down to many people!

It’s because of the love and fan support for Killzone 3, that’s why they didn’t step up. Or maybe because of Sony’s push for Move support and 3D, that’s the reason killzone 3 did not do much.

    Erthazus = Retarded Troll

    Solution = Ignore

    If you =/= ignore

    Then Retarded Troll = Successful.

Anyway, I feel good for Guerrilla. I would classify them as a veteran developer now that they’ve actually made varied levels, and the best graphics out of a console in the world. There are no other games that can beat those graphics, except for maybe God of War 3, or Uncharted 3, but it hasn’t been released yet, so…

Just because a dev has a not-so-good storyline, does not mean that should drain all of their creativity. Killzone 3 had some of the greatest graphics, which no one (except maybe 1 or 2 other devs) had been able to do. Another problem is that they delved into FPS in an already FPS over-saturated market.

They are a veteran developer now, and now that their team has those skills, they better surprise the SHIT out of us in their next IP.

@7: Haha, totally agree. Either he bashes a game before launch and even after launch (Killzone 3, Enslaved). Or he praises the game before it’s release and then bashes it more and more till it’s finally released then continues to bash it (Crysis 2).

    What a sad human being.

It a shame that a certain member always has to hijack any thread regarding the PS3 with his biased negativity and pointless and agressive remarks, they must have something seriously lacking in their real life – like love or something – that makes them write such predictable drivel.

Anyway, for all Killzone 3′s issues, there hasn’t been a game in the last few years that has brought so many members of the other community I’m part of to play online together as this one has and for that I’m grateful to Guerrilla for the work they have done.

Yeah, I don’t know what’s happened to Erthazus this past year. I remember a long time ago he used to be one of the more interesting and technically minded members to chat with. It’s been like watching someone descend into madness to be quite frank, and sad too.

@Robo_1, the reason is simple. Look at the thread. If you will bash everything about Playstation 3 everyone will say you that you have no life, you are stupid, troll, PC|Xbox 360 fanboy and etc. Because they defend everything that is from Sony.
I’m just doing it for fun. I think you are right. I need to stop trolling, but people need to stop praising something that really does not deserve an attention and i never said that Killzone 3 is bad, i said that it does not deserve this huge attention.

    and thank you.

The gfx in Killzone 3 is mediocre. Very, very low-res textures, low poly count, bad lighting… The only nice things are the post-process effects and the sky. It’s like a piece of shit with sugar coating. And the FOV is WAY, WAY to low.

Games like GoW 3, Uncharted 2 and GT5 (except for shadow and alpha) have very good gfx though.

    #19 4 years ago

@Stolenglory, oh SHI, you got me :D

But you also (all of you). Should stop praising Sony for “nothing”. Because it’s just show that you are not better then me or itsucks in this. The only difference is that you are “Being Polite” and of course better english grammar and technical writing.

@Crysis, then ignore. Whats the problem?
I know that a lot of people (not from here) agree with me. What i said can hurt only fanboys who care. You care you are a fanboy. :)

@JP, ” It’s like a piece of shit with sugar coating.”

EXACTLY :D all the models in the game are freakin clunky with low texturing all over the place with HDR lightning and post-process effects on top of it.

  22. Robo_1

Fair do’s then Erthazus, it would be nice to chat next gen specs and other more technically charged topics without having to wade neck deep in fanboy BS. The thing with trolling around is that it can be fun for a while, but quickly it can become your defining characteristic, and people will get as sick of it as if you were a genuine raving fanboy.

Anyway, it would be cool to have you back to your pre-trolling days. :)

if Killzone 3 is not mediocre why isn’t it selling well?

fanboys regard killzone 3 as the ‘best shooter’ on consoles. If it’s the best why isn’t it selling well????

The answer: IT’S GENERIC, not that good and OVERHYPED by you!
FPS genre is the main and well known and played genre ever! (no doubt about it since DOOM, Wolfenstien and Quake help define the genre and graphics)
The competition had always been around FPS and not other genres.

COD is simply the best FPS out there in terms of sales? Why do people regard COD a great game even though many haters (like yourself) dislike the game yet still buy the game?
Well the campaign is hollywood style and something relating to action military war movies we had seen before from friends house, dvd/bluray or at the cinema.
What is so great about the online? Nothing, it’s simply a ‘pick up and play’ type of game. Meaning anybody can jump in, and that is the core of COD! The multiplayer is geared towards casual. Why do you think Marvel vs Capcom 3 earned the toplight for weeks in top charts?

Now we come to Killzone 3, if that game is so good as you say it is, why isn’t it selling? How many ps3 install base do we have currently? 40+ million? let’s take half of that and say 20million all play FPS. Why aren’t the 20% FPS players buying Killzone 3?
ok you want to use the excuse and say there are pirates, how many pirates are there? just 2%.
This is not an excuse to proclaim why Killzone 3 isn’t selling.

Checking on Game.co.uk on the collectors edition, that sh* is not even sold out yet! Killzone 3 is nothing but a generic overhype game.

Please you are the fucking troll, you are always here to defend Killzone 3 topic with your trash ideology because someone simply post their opinion on the game.

now f**k off! next thing for you to do is troll over review sites and defend Killzone 3.

  27. Jay

Since when do game sales define what a good game is? Shadow of the Colossus, Beyond Good & Evil are both held in high regard by critics and fans yet hardly set the world on fire with regards to sales.

I’m not a fan of delusional fanboyism but nor am I a fan of gamers picking over every insignificant detail to criticise a game they have little interest in actually playing. The fact there are plenty of us who are really enjoying playing Killzone 3 as I’m sure there are those who aren’t. It’s a shame that people can’t debate the pros and cons of a particular game in an intelligent manner rather than resorting to name calling and abuse.

    #27 4 years ago
  28. Dralen

@17 Why should I? I have already made my feelings perfectly clear of what I feel about this game; on the forums and other Killzone 3 posts and so have you.

    #28 4 years ago
  29. xino

    @jay
sales does not define a good game? ok..so COD games and Halo are not good games. Why do people buy them then?

Those games you listed…tell me why they failed?
to me I can say they failed because of poor marketing, end off! if they poured good marketing to those games, people would buy it. Same thing with Demon’s Souls. Bad marketing by Sony because they didn’t believe in the game and fans praised the game.

So what does this have to do with Killzone 3? you are trying to say Killzone 3 had bad marketing? sorry but Sony spent millions on Killzone 3′s marketing more than GT5!
Since they know GT5 would sell anyway and fans have waited for so long.

People are just not interested in a generic game like Killzone 3 and offered to play Bulletstorm instead that introduces a new way to play FPS. What does Killzone 3 introduces?

    #29 4 years ago
  30. Crysis

@Xino, You clearly have no idea what you’re on about, no one buys a CoD game for it’s SP & it’s MP is overly simple but I guess some people like that, then you claim KZ3 was overyhyped & follow up by praising CoD, it’s obvious that you’re a child, an adult wouldn’t be such a hypocrite & can differentiate fact from opinion.

    #30 4 years ago
  31. xxJPRACERxx

Hey, I’m not a fan of Killzone 3, I like it (mp part really) but I agree with others that sales =/= quality.

The hardcore gamers are a minority compared to the casual public and generally the casual public have no taste in games.

It’s like movies. The summer blockbusters, that are entertaining but general “bad” movies, make a lot of money but the really good movies generally don’t. They became cult classic and are remade 10-15 years later and then thay make money, but the original is generally 100x better.

flawed comment! From that comment exposes your opinion and taste.
Please elaborate on the Good block buster movies failing.

Because Lords of the Ring, Iron Man, Spiderman, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Inception etc are all great movies and earn block buster smash hits. If you think they are failing then you must be referring to movies such as Beastly good and bad movies such as Thor.

@33 Personally, the trolls on here have pretty much coalesced into one single, indistinguishable entity for me.

Think of some weird hentai tentacle monster, with each tentacle being a different troll, and that would be close enough to what I imagine when I think of them.

@29: It’s called hype. People act like CoD and Halo are gods to them. There are well made TV-Spots that don’t even try to tell you what the game is really like (See Halo: ODST Trailer), but are fantastic to create Hype. John Doe is impressed, having not played a game in like … forever. John Doe buys game, doesn’t care if it delivers. He’s part of the crowd.

@37: Yes, Mr. Sherlock, i know what Hentai is. It’s that thing where girls get raped, but then decided to like it. The women usually sound like abused hamsters and tend to talk in the third person while having sex. Kind of like “Sasuke is sticking his ‘Thing’ inside me.” While Sasuke is sticking his Thing inside of her. It’s like a guide.

Oh and they usually come together after 5 minutes of rape. Love it.

the people who always start flame wars and instigate arguments!

    *Gekidami
    *Crysis
    *YoungZero

these 3 fucking assholes seriously needs to get banned for real!

You can never post your opinion without these idiots barking at you just to defend their beloved game. Always willing to argue about games 24/7 (hence the website VG24/7) and the worst part is their comments and arguments have no logic or backup to them rather than belittle you all the time.

I bet you! if these fucking assholes are banned! The comment section would be less heated and will be full of many readers opinions without arguments and fights all the time. Do it Pat, ban this assholes and see what the results brings.

Everytime I see their names up in the comment section constantly attacking someone’s opinion!

There are people who comes to specific topic to troll and make the same comments in each, it is your duty to ignore them! If you can’t ignore them and want to have a go then you are the troll!

    *Erthazus
I don’t care what he says, I know he’s a PC fanboy and if he tries to make comments to downgrade consoles and its graphics, I would step in and mark his argument as fail with references.

Mean while others names above are troll who would argue and personally attack you! Please ban those 3 above!

“Everytime I see their names up in the comment section constantly attacking someone’s opinion!”

They’re not attacking anyone’s opinion. They’re pointing out their ignorance.

    There’s a difference.

Ummm….Xino, I’ve never commented on your comments before because every time I see your posts, you never seem to be able to hold a mature discussion with anybody.
Before you start pointing fingers at anyone, you should really look at yourself.
I mean, come on, seriously. You don’t know how to debate without using the F-word in every sentence. You get offended so easily when somebody argues against your opinion. Maturity is acquired through patience and understanding. Those 2 things you seem to have not yet grasped. Don’t take it the wrong way though….
Overall, I’m just saying lets turn off the personal attacks and before trying to point out other’s flaws, work on your own.

  48. Kerplunk

@44 Dismissing someone’s views is not the same as disproving them. Requesting someone be banned doesn’t make their opinion less valid it just shows you dislike having your own views challenged.

  49. daytripper

nah crysis is a good poster imo, havent really took any notice to the other two so i cant say. i think calling for them to be banned is harsh its not like they spam or anything, otherwise they would of been named more often imo.

    #49 4 years ago
  50. xino

    psssh…i don’t care if I’m banned.
If I’m banned, i want those assholes banned as well!
Then I’m sure this place would be more peaceful.

    @daytripper
you are looking at the wrong articles, look harder and you’ll see egoistic loser call people child constantly.

look at that, Michael, these kinds of people always insitigate arguments! If you know Tea is a troll, why feed the troll or respond to him?

my vouch for banning those motherfuckers still stand!
    needs approval from Pat!

Don’t you just love it when my name gets brought up and an article has been sitting on the site for days and I haven’t made or contributed a single post in it. I laugh at you losers because you truly have no lives :D But keep my spirit alive even when I do take off the site for months at a time and you all miss and question my whereabouts.

Thats the difference between me and a shit head like you Xino. SO keep aspiring to be like me one day kid.

See I like crysis and tea. Erth would be. A lot better if he wouldn’t have admitted to. Purposely trolling. And, generally always against kz3 and sony. I haven’t seen him troll anywhere else. Sometimes you get close to cool xino and then…. someone just flips your switch. Its pretty sad because I remember when I first started posting mid last year I had a few people who flipped my switch. I remember them too oddly enough.lol but I quickly let it go.

Dude just let it go if someone disagrees with you let it be. I know you can rise above it.

@53 to me that reads like “dont be critical of my personal preference but its ok to give shit to others with another preference” its ok for some but not for others.
