Project M turns Super Smash Bros. Brawl up to eleven

20110117projectm_off

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a jolly good bit of Nintendo-fandom fun, but it's not exactly the deepest fighter out there. The fan-made Project M aims to correct this by introducing new ways to cancel, dodge, and manoeuvre - all of which serves to turn the speed and complexity up by about a bazillion.

The Project M website contains a list of implemented and proposed fixes and modifications to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, many inspired by Super Smash Bros. Melee's arguably more complex gameplay.

The Project M manifesto calls for "A fast-paced game with flowing, organic movement, where the player has a great degree of control over his character due to the technical skill that he's achieved."

There's a Youtube channel where you can see a few examples of work in progress, largely incomprehensible to the button-mashers among us. You can see an example below demonstrating aerial cancels; Link drops to the ground much more swiftly than in the release version.

The mod will run directly from an SD card on unmodified Wii consoles. A demo is expected by early February.

Thanks, GoNintendo.
