3DS tech will be “mimicked” unless it has “real breakthrough in gameplay”, says Pachter

Michael Pachter has told CVG that the just-announced Nintendo 3DS will be “mimicked” by companies like Apple for its iPhone unless it has a “real breakthrough in gameplay.”

Commenting after this morning’s announcement, he said: “What’s interesting to me is that Nintendo is so bold. It seems that if 3D on portable devices was easy, Apple would have beat them to it.

If they truly pioneer a technology, my guess is that Apple will mimic the technology. Without a real breakthrough in gameplay (as happened with the DS), I’m not sure that this device will do much more than serve as a replacement for current DS owners.”

Nintendo announced the new handheld this morning, which will drop sometime before March 2011. This is possibly what it may turn out to be like in terms of software.

    Once again Pachter says something else blindingly obvious and remarkably inane.

    If Nintendo do something good, others will follow. Well, yes. That’s kind of how the world works. Someone pioneers, others follow.

    Also, the title is totally misleading. Pachter makes two separate points –

    A – Apple will copy Nintendo if they Pioneer a technology.

    B – Without a breakthrough in gameplay it will be little more than an incremental upgrade.

    The title suggests that a breakthrough in gameplay will somehow prevent Apple from mimicking the tech???

    God please. People RELAX.

    Nintendo is not a technology company. Its probably going to be a gimmick 3D at best.
    Sony (one of the biggest technology companies) and other big companies together (!!!) just started to do a serious research with 3D and now small software company invented a 3D without glasses.

    Come on. Lets be rational. There is not going to be something special.

    @2

    Actually, 3D without glasses has been around for a while. Search Autosterioscopic 3D on any decent search engine.

    The DS’s camera should be able to reproduce that effect nicely.
