Sony: Home ’08 launch “still on track in UK”
CVG‘s posted a quote from SCEE saying Home is “still on track” to ship over here this year. As we’ve been told before. Approximately 60,000 times.
SCEA said yesterday that the app’s launch was “imminent“.
We get it. Just fucking launch it and let us stop writing about the fact it’s out in 2008.

That is getting a bit old, isn’t it pat?
Though it does give everyone a new comments thread to talk about how dull and shit it is, like that’s never been said a few hundred-thousand times before.
I do wish they’d stop saying it’ll be out soon just so there wouldn’t be an excuse for such threads. And no, I don’t blame you, you’re just reporting news. Which is your job.

It’ll be interesting to see quite what people make of this once it’s actually freely available.

I just hope there will be as many stories about Magnetic Billiards in a few weeks.

I’m still failing to see the attraction of this particular application – what exactly is the point of it? Anyone?

Yeah, what’s the point of communicating with people online, eh?

While I see the point in communicating online, I don’t really see any point in walking around in some advert ridden second life clone – I’d much rather be playing an actual game. I just see it losing any novelty in about 2 minutes, that’s all. (Just my two pennies, obviously)

Fuck them if Sony will release “Home” in the US and UK this year but will not make it available throughout the rest of Europe (ie. Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and others) within this time frame.

@Sikamikanico,
You are focussing on one aspect of the software and isolating it from everything else. You might as well say that you don’t see any point in sitting down to go somewhere. But when you contextualise sitting down as part of driving a car in order to get somewhere, you see the point.
Home isn’t about walking round. It’s about what you go too. But even then, it is so much more than that.
I’m looking forward to:
- Inviting friends to your pad, where they can listen to/view/watch music/photos/videos on your HDD, subject to permissions.
- Cross-game invites and group game launching.
- Game spaces with clues, tips and other related content such as sandboxes for the likes of Warhawk.
- Mini-games such as pool, chess, arcade games, bowling.
- Previews of movie and game trailers before Johnny Interweb at large gets them.
All these things are for free.

- Cross-game invites and group game launching.
This is the only thing I might use and it should be possible to do that without launching Home.

What’s annoying is the game sites saying…. “it’s close to the end of the year, it’s not going to release” then Sony clarifies and the same site says, “they’ve told us umpteen times, just release it already, we don’t care” stop making it news if you don’t care.

Hm, a mostly positive Home thread.
I retract my first comment.
The highlight had to be Cort’s post, as it details things that will make Home worthwhile in the long run. Home doesn’t strike me as ambitious, it was never meant to be, it’s just social networking for the PS3 to give all PS3 users fora with which they can communicate and get engaged in fun activities together. For that, it seems great.

Interesting to see they’re going to be charging for setting up clubs… any beta testers know why you would want to set up a club in the first place? i.e. what benefit does it have over just having mates around to your “house”?
