Quick quotes: Sony still has a bit of a PS2 “hangover” says SCE UK boss

ps2

“What I find at SCE is that we’ve lots of passionate and committed people. But there’s definitely an opportunity to up the pace of our competitiveness. We still have a bit of a hangover – at least in the UK company – from the days of being market dominant [with PS2]. I don’t think we are as sharp as we can be. There’s room for improvement there. So it’s not change everything, but it is turn up the dial, and learn to compete.” – SCE UK’s new boss Fergal Gara to MCV.

SCEE expresses “serious concerns” over Watchdog report accuracy

ps3

SCE UK boss Ray Maguire has expressed “serious concerns” about a Watchdog program airing tonight in the UK, which takes on PS3 hardware failures.

“From [our] correspondence to date, I have serious concerns as to the accuracy of these allegations and the likely tone of the Watchdog report,” said Maguire in a six-page letter you can read in full on GI.

“The information that you have provided suggests a fundamental misunderstanding of the technical issues and a mis-characterisation of SCEUK’s OOW repairs policy.”

Maguire added: “We entirely refute the suggestion that PS3 consoles have an inherent defect or other design issue which is akin to any warranty issue experienced by another console manufacturer.

“SCEUK has sold 2.5 million consoles in the UK since March 2007 and stands by the quality of its products. Clearly the allegations you propose to air in your program might have the potential to adversely effect Sony Computer Entertainment’s reputation for supplying high quality products and customer service and we take very seriously any issues that can impact the public’s or our customers’ confidence in those products.”

This is going to be awesome. Have a read of the letter, then watch Watchdog at 8.00pm BST on BBC 1 tonight.

Sony UK: PS3 sales are past our “expectations”

ps3slim52

The huge spike in sales of the PlayStation 3 that was confirmed to VG247 today by Chart-Track was beyond the “expectations” of SCE UK. That is according to sales director of Sony UK Mark Howsen.

“The first week’s Chart-Track numbers for sales of the new PlayStation 3 were ahead of our expectations, so we were extremely pleased.”

Speaking to GI on the 1,000% increase in sales in the UK of the console, he said “A new price point and a new machine has proven a significant catalyst to help consumers make the move onto PS3.”

“Our new advertising campaign, The Game Is Just The Start, is also demystifying the value proposition.

This ongoing campaign and the addition of some great exclusive and new IPs – Uncharted: Among Thieves, EyePet, Heavy Rain – and services [such as] PlayStation Video Store, will hopefully provide even more trigger points to drive future purchases of PlayStation 3.”
