Nelson’s just posted the Live play chart for the week commencing November 9, and it’s headed by Modern Warfare 2. We never, ever saw that coming.

Epic boss Mark Rein’s said it’s no surprise Gears of War 2′s come in at second place in the Live play charts to Halo 3 in the last week, pointing out that cut-price DLC for the 9 million-strong Bungie shooter is always going to be a tough act to beat.

“Gears is in second because Halo 3 has been out for over a year and a half and has probably sold nearly 9,000,000 copies by now,” said the exec in a comments thread on the Epic forums.

“So when they offer reduced-priced multiplayer DLC users come back to the game and they get a spike in their user base that [dwarfs] ALL of the other games on Xbox Live – especially new games that have only been out for a few weeks such as Gears of War 2 and Call of Duty: World at War. But being in second is still pretty amazing considering we’ve only had the time to sell a small fraction of the numbers they have sold.”

He has a point. Thanks, IGN.

Halo 3 was the most played games on Xbox Live for the week beginning November 24, beating both Gears of War 2 and Call of Duty: World at War to number one.

Just goes to show. Bungie all the way. Here’s the top ten.

Gears of War was the most played game on Xbox Live for the week beginning November 10, beating off CoD4 and Halo 3.

What happened to putting these out every week, Microsoft? We used to enjoy writing “Call of Duty 4 wins Live play charts again” every Wednesday for months on end.

Nothing like a bit of controversy to get things moving. Halo 3′s back in the top spot of the Live play charts after many weeks in CoD4′s shadow, following a week in which Bungie teased new upcoming content for the game.

Call of Duty 4′s top of the Live play charts. As it has been forever. That doesn’t mean we’re going to stop telling you it’s top. No way. We celebrate the win. Just like Tiger Woods. Call of Duty 4 is the Tiger Woods of console shooters. It punches the air and screams victory like no other Xbox Live-enabled FPS.
