PS3 was saved by Wii, says analyst

ps3slim2

PS3′s on the up. Why didn’t it get crushed by 360? It was Blu-ray, games and an all-round services package focussed on media-playing, right? Not according to DFC Intelligence: it was Wii.

“The main danger Sony faced was that the Xbox 360 would become embedded as the system of choice,” says a new report from the agency.

“Instead consumers flocked to the Nintendo Wii. The Xbox 360 had solid sales, but they have not been enough to give Microsoft anywhere near a breakout market position.”

Should need for Wiis drop off this Holiday, PS3′s reduced price and the imminence of God of War III is likely to now make PS3 a viable choice for mainstream consumers, the report adds.

DFC Intelligence David Cole has claimed Sony and Nintendo’s handheld offering have run out of steam.

“The dedicated portable game systems from companies like Nintendo and Sony are still expected to lead the [handheld] market, but it appears growth for these devices has peaked,” he said.

“The platforms from Apple are expected to be responsible for the bulk of market growth over the next few years.”

Analyst: Xbox 360 Slim “is a question of when, not if”

xbox360

Analyst David Cole of DFC Intelligence has told Industry Gamers that it won’t be long before Microsoft released a slimmer version of Xbox 360.

“I think it is a question of when not if,” he told the site. “However, the when part is a big uncertainty … rumors have been going on for a long time. I think people were asking me the same question last year at this time. As cost efficiencies allow smaller and more reliable is always a good thing. However, you also have something like Project Natal which could also tie in with hardware redesigns.

“There are a lot of questions Microsoft must weigh internally and there are always going to arguments on both sides of the fence around timing. So I don’t know, but in our DFC forecasts we anticipated a major redesign in 2010….so I guess that was our bet.”

While the other three analysts the site spoke with, Tom Greenwald of Signal Hill, Arvind Bhatia from Sterne Agee and Broadpoint AmTech’s Ben Schachter, do not agree with him, each do foresee a new SKU redesigned with Project Natal for 2010.

Industry revenues $57 billion in 2009, says DFC

DFC Intelligence has forecast worldwide games revenues to reach $57 billion in 2009, with no signs of slowing due to slumping economies and expensive hardware.

“Consumer spending on software is at record levels and the game business seems to actually benefit from a recession because games are a relatively cheap form of home entertainment,” said DFC analyst David Cole.
