This Week, Retronauts Explores a True Legend (of Zelda)

Listen in as USgamer's classic gaming podcast crew dives into the unrelenting greatness of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

This article first appeared on USgamer, a partner publication of VG247. Some content, such as this article, has been migrated to VG247 for posterity after USgamer's closure - but it has not been edited or further vetted by the VG247 team.

A game like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past needs no introduction. But, for the sake of tradition, let's do this thing.

To begin, I have one simple question: Have you played A Link to the Past yet? If the answer is "no," don't worry—I won't judge you. Just carve 10-12 hours out of your life, do that, and come right back here.

We good? Good.

Now that you're fully prepared, this week's episode is a semi-sequel to one I recently put together about Super Mario World. As someone who's desperately afraid of having nothing to say into a microphone, I challenged myself to put together a podcast about a single game—one whose greatness is so self-evident, there's seemingly not much left to talk about. Turns out, we had a whole lot to talk about, and our exploration of a pretty ubiquitous game made for one of our more popular episodes. So, I decided to plan out a similar discussion featuring another game directed by the phenomenal Takashi Tezuka.

If you think you know everything about A Link to the Past, hopefully, we'll surprise you. I honestly assumed I did until I decided to roll up my sleeves and do some serious research with the few reliable sources available on the Internet. For decades, I've regarded it as one of my favorite games, so hopefully the next 90 minutes will do a good job of explaining why.

Joining us on this one is Henry Gilbert, a key member of the Laser Time network—which started a Patreon campaign recently, so please give if you enjoy their brand of pop culture magic. Brett Elston also joins us on this episode, and I heartily recommend you check out his video game music podcast, VGMpire. As always, you can keep up with the latest Retronauts news via our Twitter and Facebook accounts, and check out some of our video content over on our YouTube page. And, in case you forgot, Retronauts is fully funded by our Patreon campaign, so if you can afford to donate even a dollar a month, please consider it! Every little bit really helps our cause.
