WipEout HD in-game ad removed after load time increase
Sony’s pulled an in-game ad from WipEout HD after it increased load times to up to 20 seconds, EG reports.
“The ad has been removed from WipEout HD and we are investigating the situation to ensure that any in-game advertising does not affect gameplay,” said a SCEE rep.
Check out this video to see what all the fuss was about.

New in-game ads “double” WipEout HD load times, early reports claim [Update]

Update – The ad’s been pulled.
When you boot up a game for the specific purpose of shattering the sound barrier in ludicrously speedy hovercrafts, 20-second load screens are probably the last thing you’re hoping for. However, after striking a new ad deal with Double Fusion, Sony seems to have given WipEout HD players just that.
According to a report by Industry Gamers, these new ad-addled loading screens can last up to 20 seconds — more than doubling the comparatively zippy 8-9 second loads players encountered before.
So, what’s the story from the front lines? Have any of you been forced to throw on the breaks for these turtle-slow advertisements?

WipEout HD 1.30 update is a bit broken

Some WipEout HD players are reporting difficulties with the autosave function on the game’s 1.30 update, released this week.
Luckily, some enterprising souls have come up with a workaround, as you can see on the PS boards.
Basically:
- Sign out of PSN.
- Launch the game.
- Choose “Online” from the main menu, and allow it to sign you back into PSN.
- Acknowledge release notes for the 1.30 patch.
- Wait for the game to auto-save.
Thanks, Kotaku.

WipEout HD updated to v1.26 – no-one knows what it does
If you boot up what in our opinion is the best PSN title to date, WipEout HD, you’ll be prompted to update.
However, the only thing that seems to be different is that the version number is now 1.26 and not 1.20.
The update is 11Mb.
We’ll check with Sony right away and see if we can unravel this greatest of mysteries.

…and we’re back – Christmas news round up
Happy New Year. We’re glad we shut down over Christmas. You didn’t miss a whole lot.
By far the most important story over the break was news that Free Radical cut its workforce by 140 to just 40.
The developer was confirmed as being in administration just before the Christmas holiday.
Speaking to 1UP, Cameron Gunn of administrators ReSolve Partners said, “We made around 140 employees redundant yesterday, effective 31 December (the date up to which they had been paid). We’re still trading on with the remaining 40 or so employees, have advertised the business for sale and have received some strong interest.”
News broke mid-December that staff had turned up for work only to be locked with a notice on the door telling them to adjourn to a nearby hotel.
Free Radical aside, other noteworthy Christmas news included confirmation that Mistwalker JRPG Cry On has been cancelled.
“AQI decided to cancel the project after analyzing the current market environment and forecasts for the future. We deeply apologize for troubling those who were awaiting its release,” said a company rep.
Cry On was apparently part of “Hironobu Sakaguchi’s triumvirate of Xbox 360 titles,” says this 1UP piece (the other two being Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey), and for those of you who don’t know, the game “was to be an action-RPG featuring a Nobuo Uematsu soundtrack [and] character designs by Kimihiko Fujisaka.”

WipEout HD patched, freezing fixed
WipEout HD has been patched to 1.1, as you’ll see the next time you load it. The fix apparently solves the freezing issue from the original game, where players with more than 50 people on their Friends List would get system locks.
No longer. Go and blow someone up.

WipEout HD freeze is “definitely a friends list issue”
We’ve just been told from a PS3 dev source that the WipEout HD locking problem is “definitely a friends list issue, not an SDK bug. It can be coded around, so there’s bound to be an imminent patch.”
As previously reported, people with more than 50 friends on their PS3 lists are getting lock-ups with the game.
SCEA said overnight it’s looking into the problem. Sounds as though it isn’t anything too heavy, so expect it to be fixed soon.

Sony admits locking problems with WipEout HD
Kotaku’s posted a comment from SCEA which appears to confirm that there is a problem with locking on some PS3s and WipEout HD.
“Following the release of WipEout HD on PlayStation Store yesterday, we’ve been following the reports by some members of the community regarding problems with game freezes,” said a rep.
“We’d like to reassure you all that the WipEout team is working hard to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.”
As reported yesterday, it seems the game doesn’t get on too well with large friends lists. Has to be pretty easy to fix, right?

Rumour: WipEout HD causing lock-ups with large friends lists
PS3F’s reporting that some of you are getting lock-ups with WipEout HD. Apparently forumites on the official US PS boards are putting the problem down to having a friends list with more than 50 people on it.
Our very own Daniel Plainview was experiencing problems with it yesterday, so there’s probably something in this. That’ll teach you to know lots of people.
