Two titles have been shelved, including Microsoft Flight, but Microsoft has not closed its Vancouver studio.
Microsoft has opened a new first party studio in Vancouver, Canada, which is apparently working on a “core AAA shooter experience using Kinect.”
MMO publisher Nexon has apparently closed its Vancouver studio, resulting in 90 job losses. A studio-wide meeting was held yesterday morning to break news to staff, according to this Kotaku report. Nexon’s ongoing games – MapleStory, Combat Arms, Mabinogi, and so on – are thought to be unaffected. Gamasutra’s confirmed the move as well.
According to this Globe and Mail report, EA’s shelving plans for a new Vancouver development studio thanks to admitted slow Q4 sales and a generally tough economic environment. “These are challenging times, they’re uncertain times for our industry and across the board,” said EA spokesman Colin Macrae. “We continue to be firmly rooted in Vancouver.” […]
According to this Gamasutra piece, GDC Canada will take place on May 12-13 next year, to be held at the Vancouver Convention and Exposition Centre. The organizers have also opened the call for proposals on lectures, roundtables, and panel sessions, and will accept submissions up to midnight, Friday, November 28. Full details through the link.
