UT3 bots score higher on Turing test than human players
Well, someone’s finally done it. Phys reports researchers at the University of Texas have created AI capable of passing a Turing test – fooling a human into believing they are interacting with another human. The computer scientists built a couple of Unreal Tournament 3 bots so lifelike that judges tagged both as human players 52% of the time – while actual human players usually manage about 42%. You know what that means, right? The singularity is coming. May our new machine overlords enjoy our feeble monkey efforts at fragging.
Thanks, Eurogamer.

PS3 UT3 Titan Pack delayed two weeks

The PS3 version of Unreal Tournament’s Titan Pack has been delayed, Epic’s confirmed.
The console version will now release on March 19.
“Unfortunately, due to circumstances out of our control, the certification process for the PS3 patch and DLC has taken much longer than we expected,” said Epic’s Steven Polge in this forum post.
“As a result, we have been forced to push back the release date for the PS3 version to 3/19.”
The Pack was supposed to ship today.
It includes a ton of free content. Get details here.
It’s a PC and PS3 affair only. Here‘s why 360 owners won’t get it.

Epic explains why UT3 Titan Pack won’t make 360

Want to know why the Unreal Tournament 3 Titan Pack won’t be released on 360? Simple, really: there’s loads of reasons.
This from an Epic email sent to fans, as published by Destructoid:
The file size limitations prevent us from releasing it, not to mention we have things like split-screen support (which 360 already has), maps that are already in the 360 version, the integrated mod browser (which 360 doesn’t support)… the list goes on. Obviously, we are big supporters of Xbox 360 (Gears, anyone?) but there are significant hurdles keeping us from shipping the Titan Pack for Microsoft’s platform.
And there we are. More through the link.

Rein strikes red line through “40 million UTIII pirates” story
Epic VP Mark Rein has confirmed that a story claiming he said Unreal Tournament III’s PC servers had been hit by 40 million pirated keys is incorrect.
“I don’t recall saying that particular number,” he said, speaking to videogaming247.
“We’ve certainly had lots of invalid attempts to access our servers and piracy is definitely a problem in our industry but I don’t know where that particular number came from.”
The original story, posted by TG Daily, claimed, “We spoke with Mark Rein, VP of Epic Games, and learned that the Unreal Tournament 3 servers received over 40 million attempts at illegitimate access using pirate keys.”
That’s that sorted, then.

40 million pirate attempts to access UTIII servers says Rein
This TG Daily report reckons Epic’s received more than 40 million attempts to access Unreal Tournament servers using pirated keys, claiming the figure came from studio boss Mark Rein. That’s a world’s worth of piracy, right there. No idea how legit this is, but we’ll drop the man himself a mail and ask.

Rein cagey on UTIII 360 mod distribution
In an OXM interview this week, Epic boss Mark Rein confirmed that user mods will be coming UTIII 360 in some shape or form, although exact details were still being ironed out.
“We know some of these great mods are going to play a role on Xbox 360, even if we have to get some people and bring them over ourselves,” he said hinting at DLC as a possible solution.
UTIII is pencilled in for release this summer.

We do have a release date for UT3 360, says Rein
Epic boss Mark Rein has told videogaming247 that the company does know a release date for Unreal Tournament 3 on Xbox 360, but you’re going to have to wait a little longer to get it.
“We do, but I don’t think we put it out yet,” said Rein when asked if the SKU had a release date. “It’s kind of a when it’s done thing. We have an idea of when it’s coming. We have a big Midway Gamer’s Day next week, in fact, in Las Vegas, where Midway’s invited a whole bunch of people to come and play the game. I’m sure after that happens you’ll see lots of impressions of the game.”
Rein also reiterated that the code is up, running and looking great.
“It’s in really good shape,” he said. “I was playing it yesterday here in my office.”
Sounds like “sooner rather than later” is about right. Keep your eyes open for first impressions next week.

UT3 360 coming along “really nicely”, says Rein
Steadfastly aiming to keep the dream alive, Epic VP Mark Rein’s posted on the company’s forum that the 360 version of UT3 is still on the way and may be seen playable soon.
“We don’t have a particular release date yet but we’re going to be playing it with some members of the press in two weeks at Midway’s next Gamers Day in Las Vegas,” he said. “Should be fun. The game is coming along really nicely.”
Rein had previously mentioned that the game was being held up because of Microsoft’s reticence to allow user-made levels up on Live, one of the USPs of the PS3 version.
The shooter’s been out on PS3 since last November in the US.

GDC: Mark Rein meets his match – it’s Tom Bramwell
Funny. Epic head Mark Rein can seriously talk. Like, really. Eurogamer’s Tom Bramwell can do the same. See what happens when they’re put in the same room. Taste:
Eurogamer: So apart from that, how’s the 360 build going?
Mark Rein: Great. I don’t have a release date for it if that was your next question.
Eurogamer: If you had to pluck -
Mark Rein: I don’t pluck. I’m pluckless. Pluck off.
Eurogamer: So what, this year? Next year?
Mark Rein: Oh, this year of course.
Eurogamer: Can you actually say anything about Gears of War 2?
Mark Rein: We’re doing it. It’s going to be a really good game.
Eurogamer: I liked it when you said it was going to be “more badass”, because I was concerned that it might not be more badass.
Mark Rein: [Laughs] We had an executive review the other day and I can tell you it is definitely more badass. It’s really good. One thing I can say is that compared to where we were in the February before we shipped the last Gears, the game is in phenomenal shape. There are some good surprises for people. We’ll start talking about it over the next few months.
Eurogamer: You said November. Do you think you’ll go for the same Emergence Day?
Mark Rein: I have no idea. I don’t think anyone’s put a day in the sand.
Eurogamer: Does Microsoft decide that?
Mark Rein: We figure it out based on when we think we’ll ship it. Right now they said November. I see nothing that leads me to believe it won’t be November. It’s in great shape.
Eurogamer: Does it have four-player co-op?
Mark Rein: It is a game. You will like it.
Eurogamer: Let’s talk about features in games that you like. Do you like four-player co-op?
Mark Rein: [Very long pause.] So what else is up? I’m not telling you anything more about Gears of War 2.
Eurogamer: We can say things like Marcus Fenix is back, right, because that’s in your press release. What about Dom? What about Cole Train?
Mark Rein: [No response.]
Eurogamer: You talked earlier about how the tech demos weren’t Gears of War 2 -
Mark Rein: Yeah, those were just test environments to show off the technology.
Eurogamer: You said yourself though that you rarely put something in the engine unless you plan to use it yourself.
Mark Rein: Yep. Those are features that will be in our upcoming games.
Eurogamer: So: destructible environments. If those were in Gears of War, that would make quite a difference.
Mark Rein: You never quit! I love you guys.
We reckon Mark said that last bit through clenched teeth with blood dripping out of his eyes. Go read the rest.
