Games news versus Price and Bleszinski – Why it’s time for developers to man up

Last night, Insomniac’s Ted Price claimed he was “misquoted” and his words from a recent EGM interview were taken “out of context” when reported by gaming news sites, calling for “the press” to focus on the bigger picture of an American legal issue instead of posting his words up as news.
Price joins Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski as another high profile developer to recently claim he’s been mistreated by the games media, both of whom have complained about the use of “context” in news reports.
I’ve wanted to write this piece for a long time. VG247 was one of the sites Bleszinski chose to publicly name in his “push back” against what he sees as a growing “tabloid” press sector earlier this year, and I never felt we got the chance to state our case.

Jaffe: US Supreme Court activism “pointless and naive”

Eat Sleep Play’s David Jaffe – currently working on Twisted Metal for the PlayStation 3 is no stranger to controversy or his comments being taken out of context.
So in the wake of Insomniac’s Ted Price’s plea for games press to help mobilise the gaming public against proposed restrictions on sale of certain games – borne as it was by Price being misquoted – you may figure Jaffe would be on board too.
Not so.

Interview: Ted Price and David DeMartini explain the Insomniac multi-plat gigaton

It’s not every day someone says, “Insomniac’s Ted Price is on the line”. But then it’s not every day a studio with Insomniac’s sheer weight – the outfit has sold over 35 million games for PlayStation hardware – decides to move away from a superglue relationship with Sony to develop a multi-format title with EA.
“Insomniac is making a 360 game” are words few people ever thought would be true. But true they are, and EA Partners GM David DeMartini is thrilled. Price’s 16 year-old studio is one of the most successful in the world, with benchmark properties such as Ratchet & Clank and Resistance a backbone of Sony’s first-party offering since time immemorial. The developer has only ever released PlayStation products.
Price and DeMartini outlined their shock deal to us on the phone last night, with Price saying he can’t wait to get “Xbox 360 fans excited about” his new, EA-published Insomniac “universe”, and explaining why a brand so massively “PlayStation” felt the need to bat for the other side.

Resistance 2 launches in the US
Resistance 2 has released in the States, with Insomniac’s Ted Price claiming the game will be the best shooter of the year.
“Not only did we set out to create a game that offered the most content for shooter fans in 2008, we also wanted to produce the best overall first-person shooter in 2008,” he said.
“With huge boss battles, massive enemy encounters, and three innovative and stand-alone game modes, Resistance 2 delivers a premiere shooter experience above any other with essentially three full games packed into one.”
The 50s blaster has scored well so far, but an average below 90 percent on Metacritic won’t go down well with Sony’s bean-counters.
Europeans have to wait until November 28 for the game.

Sequels allow devs “to hit the ground running”, says Insomniac CEO
Ted Price, Insomniac President and CEO of Insomniac Games, has told Reuters that one of the advantages of sequels is that it allows developers to hit the ground running.
“Developers can hit the ground running with sequels,” said Ted. “The game’s story and art style have a solid base, the tech and tools are stable and the basic gameplay mechanics have gone through plenty of tuning in the first game.”
“It’s certainly a liberating experience when you’re no longer arguing over the main character’s name, or waiting for basic systems to be implemented,” he explained.
“The end result is usually a game that’s bigger, more polished and has more innovative features than the original game.”
