Eidos name dropped from publishing, Square pulls rank in Europe and US

It was bound to happen sometime. Eidos owner Square Enix has decided to form a new European entity in Square Enix Europe, to be headed up by current Eidos CEO Phil Rogers – a move which will result in the Eidos publishing brand being “vapourised”.
The amalgamation will result in job losses although precise numbers are unknown as of yet.
“Unfortunately we are expecting some jobs to be impacted directly by this in both Europe and North America,” read a statement from the company.
“We are hoping to minimise this wherever possible and offer support and advice to any employees directly affected.”
In the US all sales, marketing and distribution responsibilities will be transferred from Eidos Inc to the region’s Square Enix office, headed up by John Yamamoto.
Apparently the current Eidos dev studios will still carry the Eidos brand.

Wada – Square to be top 10 “player” in global entertainment

Square Enix super-chief Yoichi Wada has dreams. Big dreams. Forget games: he wants the publisher to be one of the biggest names in global entertainment.
“Our goal is to become one of the top ten players in the world’s media and entertainment industry,” he said, talking in an interview on the firm’s site.
“Since the game market is global, both our contact with our customers and our game development must become global, too.”
Buying Eidos was an accelerating move, Wada said.
“It would, however, take us a considerable time to mature into a global enterprise under our own steam. It was essential that we found a successful European or North American company to work together with, and Eidos proved to be the ideal partner.”
Tons more through there, including words from Eidos CEO Phil Rogers.

Eidos six-month financials show dramatic cut in losses

Eidos showed heartening results for the six months ending December today, with revenues increased 26 percent and losses dramatically reduced compared to the previous period.
Sales were up to £80.3 million for the half-year period, compared to £63.4 million the previous year
Losses fell from £81.4 million in 2007 to just £1 million in 2008.
“The first six months of trading this year were characterised by an incredibly competitive and increasingly challenging retail environment,” said Eidos boss, Phil Rogers.
“The changes made at Eidos over the past year, coupled with the continued hard work and determination of our employees and external partners, means we are well placed one year into our three-year strategic plan to produce higher-quality, must-have games to entertain our consumer.”

SCi “ready to talk” on new IP
New SCi CEO Phil Rogers reckons Eidos is on the look-out for new IP – despite having just binned 14 games.
“We have a full complement; we have fantastic franchises, next-gen titles, Wii and DS titles, casual and mobile games and we are developing some incredible game technology,” he said in an interview with MCV. “That said, we are always on the lookout for great property, from casual to next-gen titles and for distribution titles for our territory distribution offices. If the property is right, we are ready to talk.”
He added, talking of the recent project cancellations and lay-offs: “We want to be a leaner and fitter company in terms of what we do and what we release.
“In these situations you have to be honest, both internally and externally, and that is why we cancelled 14 titles. As a company we have been bringing out too many average games which are tying up resources. In today’s environment of lengthening development cycles and increasing costs, we need to be more ruthless and focus on our quality titles.”
