Nintendo revealed total worldwide sales for a select number of titles in its Q3 earnings report this morning. According to the firm’s figures, the best-seller for the period was Pokémon Black and White 2 with 7.63 million units sold. The DS title was followed by New Super Mario Bros. 2 on 3DS for 5.96 million, Animal Crossing: New Leaf on 3DS with 2.73 million sold in Japan-only, New Super Mario Bros. U on Wii U with 2.01 million, and Nintendo Land sold with Wii U moving 2.33 million. The next title on the Pokémon docket is Pokémon X and Pokémon Y for 3DS, slated for release in October. New Super Mario Bros. 2 is all about fat stacks of gold coins, and Nintendo has added a new incentive for players to get rich quick or die trying. Players who earn over 1 million coins in the game will become part of an exclusive club, and get a shiny certificate to commend their hoarding ways.

The German arm of Nintendo is offering to fork out real gold coins worth over €220 to commemorate the brave collection skills of New Super Mario Bros 2 fans. My hazy understanding of this auto-translated press release suggests you need to send in a photo of your 3DS screen proving you’ve hit 1 million coins to collect on the offer. The competition seems to be only open to German residents, and was supposed to end on October 31, but has been extended through December.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 will receive two new downloadable content packs today in Japan, Nintendo announced during its Nintendo Direct stream this morning. The DLC contains a Gold Mushroom Harvesting Pack with 2/5 difficulty, and a Record Challenge B Pack with 3/5 difficulty. A North American Nintendo Direct occurs later this morning at 10.00am EST, and it’s possible Nintendo will announced the content for the western region as well during the presentation. Nintendo 3DS game sales are booming, according to the latest figures revealed by the company. Among the biggest hitter are Mario Kart 7, Kid Icarus: Uprising and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 is still tops on the Media Create charts this week, and has been since it was released has released in Japan on July 28. 3DS XL (LL in Japan) moved 66,412 units, sales of which are up 1,757 units week-over-week. Sales overall were a bit slow for the week, as there were no new game releases.

3DS XL has arrived in the US, but take heed of a warning courtesy of GoNintendo and back up your SD card before you transfer your 3DS data over to the newer, bigger console; users report the loss of all eShop content and save files. Re-downloading will fix the first problem, but the second one is solved only by the seven stages of grief.

The 3DS XL will set you back $200 – including an AC adapter missing from the Japanese and European packaging – sporting a larger screen and form factor as well as increased battery life. It is accompanied by New Super Mario Bros. 2, the first 3DS title released simultaneously on the eShop and at retail.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has said the firm is “determined” not to take advantage of customers with DLC, as only content which enhances the length and enjoyment of the game will be released.
