A certain BioWare blockbuster may have hogged the sales spotlight last month, but – as a list provided by the NPD has conveniently reminded us – there were other games too. And people bought them! We know. We were shocked too.

Sony has released figures complied by the MAG Beta tests along with the box art for the multiplayer online shooter.
Apparently, more than 42,000 matches were played during the first public Beta between August 17 and December 5 while in October’s Beta, over 534,000miles were traveled in-game by players each week.
During its final month, more than 65,000 players logged into the Beta, 17,000 of them qualified for Squad Leader, 3500 people qualified for Platoon Leader, 1100 made it all the way to OIC, and 206 made the level 60 cap, nearly 18 million kills were made, 700 million shots were fired, and the top three most played maps belonged to the Sabotage mode.
Sounds like it was very popular, indeed.
Head on over to the US PS Blog for more, and to check out the box art.

I’ve handed out 700 MAG beta keys by hand on Twitter in the past week. That’s enough for any man.
I do, however, have 300 left. To spare me the madness, I’ve posted the lot after the break.
Enjoy yourselves. The beta ends on December 4.

Update: It looks as those these codes are Euro-only. We’re getting a bunch back not working from American readers. Don’t try to get one if you’re outside Europe.
Update 2: The text below’s been updated. We’ll just leave this page open until they’re all gone. Just keep tweeting @patlike.
SCEE just sent us 1,000 MAG beta keys. Hilariously, we’ve got to distribute them ourselves. Here’s how you get one:
- Comment on this story. Please try to be witty, or something. Or say something along the lines of, “I love buying games. I spend all my money on games.” We’re supposed to be attractive to advertisers.
- Follow all of the following on Twitter: @patlike, @vg247, @stephnunneley, @JohnnyCullen and @vahn16.
- Tweet the following ONCE: @patlike Give me a #magbeta key!
- NOTE: You MUST follow @patlike to receive the code.
- Spam me and you get nothing. Worse: you get less than nothing.
- We’ll keep doing this until they’re all gone. Just keep tweeting @patlike and we’ll keep sending out codes.
The beta’s now been extended to December 4. Good luck!

Zipper’s extended the open beta for MAG, for anyone looking to get onboard or to get playing again if you haven’t already.
Originally meant to end on Friday, the beta has been extended until sometime this week.
Zipper’s also promised details on how to get into the next beta trial for the game this week.
The game is out in January.

Zipper Interactive’s community manager, Jeremy Dunham, has announced over on the US PS Blog that MAG has entered its fourth Beta phase.
He also announced that over 6000 changes have been made since the previous Beta.
One change involves Shadow War Bonuses, which according to Dunham: “Depending on which Private Military Contractors (PMC’s) are leading in the number of contracts owned, the entire PMC team will earn different bonuses based on gametype. Leading in Sabotage adds experience points, leading in Acquisition increases leadership aura distance, and leading in Domination decreases tactical strike cooldown time.”
The devs also improved the ranking system, character hit detection, leadership abilities, and experience points.
Loads more about this can be read through the link, there.
Game’s out January 26.

There’s a video interview with MAG’s Seth Luisi over on Giant Bomb, where the director of development chats about play progression, development, and many other things.
It’s around eight minutes long and loads of stuff is mentioned, ranging from character specialization, to how the game world affects the map – but something that may be of interest to you is the role squad leaders play in the game.
As a treat of sorts for following commander’s orders, the more you do as you’re told and complete the objectives given to you, you’ll gain an experience bonus along with your squad leader leader getting points to improve his/her character.
We have embedded the video through the break there, but you can also view it through the link.

American people: if you’re planning on buying Zipper’s MAG for PS3 in January, you could do worse than pre-ordering it from 7-Eleven. As detailed in this US PS Blog post, you’ll get a “recruitment kit and poster” for your loyalty.
Just think about that for a second. A MAG poster of your very own. Now buy, soldier. The game’s out on January 26.
