EA responds to accusations from Fox News over Bulletstorm content

bulletstorm

EA has responded to a Fox News article which claimed the game was being marketed to children despite it’s M rating, and that children as young as nine could be exposed to the game’s violence and cursing, which could “significantly damage” their minds and encourage real-world violence.

BioWare is “proud” of Mass Effect sex content, says boss Muzyka

masseffect10.jpg

Speaking to videogaming247 at yesterday’s EA Games Studio Showcase in London, BioWare boss Ray Muzyka said the studio was “happy” and “proud” of the sexual content of Mass Effect, saying its inclusion was tasteful and showed the RPG was an innovator in the field of games as an emergent art form.

“It’s the same content, just in higher resolution,” he said of the alien sex scene in the PC version of Mass Effect. “So it looks really good, right? We’re happy and we’re proud of the content that’s in the game. We think it’s appropriate for the rating the game has – it’s a ‘mature’ rated game. It’s tasteful and it’s not gratuitous. It’s actually adult-themed content of relationships, mature relationships that are very realistically depicted and actually very appropriate as well, and very emotionally impactful.”

Muzyka added: “I think in many ways the fact that people want to talk about the relationships in the game is a good thing. It shows that games are an art form. It shows that Mass Effect is an innovator in that emergent art form that games are. We’re proud to be in that space, because that’s what we do: we tell great stories and we make compelling characters and we deliver an emotional experience.”

The 360 version of Mass Effect was the game at the centre of the Fox News “SeXbox” scandal, in which author Cooper Lawrence appeared on the network and said a few things she probably shouldn’t have.

Fox News edits story headline – Kotaku knows how to screengrab

According to this, Fox News has edited the headline of a story about two parents that left their child to die in its cot, saying originally “Video Gamers Leave Baby To Die” before changing the words to “Parents of Baby Left Alone in Car Seat for 8 Days Face Murder Charges”.

The story related to a Peoria Illinois couple who left their five month-old baby strapped to a carseat for eight days while they were home “playing video games, watching TV, feeding and caring for themselves.”

Fox News is now on a proper hate watch from the “community” after both the Mass Effect sex lies escapade and giving air time to Jack Thompson after the NIU shootings.

New York Post: “COLLEGE KILLER CRAZY FOR VIOLENT VID GAME”

The Murdoch-owned New York Post has linked the fact that Stephen Kazmierczak – the guy that shot five people dead at North Illinois University earlier this week – played Counter-Strike four years ago to the other fact: he was sick as a sack of hats.

“He played a lot of video games, especially Counter-Strike, really loud,” dorm mate Ben Woloszyn, 24, told the paper.

In a story headlined, “COLLEGE KILLER CRAZY FOR VIOLENT VID GAME”, the Post describes Counter-Strike as “ultra-violent”, adding, “In the game, players use imaginary money to buy shotguns, pistols and other equipment they need to move around an imaginary world in which they’re constantly under threat of being killed by roving terrorists.

“In real life, Kazmierczak – who had become ‘erratic’ recently after shunning medication for an undisclosed illness – purchased weapons like those used in Counter-Strike, including a Glock handgun and a pump-action Remington shotgun, which he bought legally on Feb. 9.”

Sensible, responsible journalism. Half the internet’s already kicking the shit out of Jack Thompson for this astonishing Fox News interview on the subject of the shooting, so it should come as no real surprise that other areas of Fox are jumping in. Note the word “Fox”. Starting to see a pattern?
