Command & Conquer’s free-to-play reboot may have been labelled as cancelled, but it seems that EA is looking for a new studio to salvage the project.

Command & Conquer has a new video available in which Victory Games discussing some of the new and returning features to the series which has gone free-to-play in this iteration. According to a post on the EA blog, plans for the future include returning to the Tiberium and Red Alert universes and possibly see the return of the Global Defense Initiative, but for now, the game picks up ten years after the last Generals, so it’s still got the same Terrorist Faction – The Global Liberation Army, the European Union is taking over for the US Faction. There’s more through the link and the video is posted below. Command & Conquer will launch later this year and is currently in Alpha.

It looks as though we might never again see a retail release for a Command & Conquer game. Instead, developers Victory are hedging their bets on a free-to-play model.

Command & Conquer was shown during EA’s gamescom press event this morning, with two C&C players battling on stage with two developers from Victory Games on stage MC-ing the battle. The game will contain episodic, story-driven missions that can be played alone or co-op. The game will launch later this year through as a free online service. It’s currently in Alpha. Command & Conquer is coming out as a free-to-play title later this year, courtesy of Victory Games. While it will launch as a game based on the C&C Generals world, the studio will add both the Red Alert and Tiberium timelines into the mix as further down the line.

C&C: Ultimate Collection has been unveiled by EA, drawing together the last 17 years of Command & Conquer titles into one all-encompassing package, which incidental includes 17 games. Purchasing the game also grants you early access to the C&C Geneals 2 beta in 2013.

EA has announced the end of beta for Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances, its browser-based, MMO-strategy game, and its the game is now officially live worldwide, in several languages. You can play it here. This is just one C&C game coming from EA, as Command & Conquer Generals 2, which uses the Frostbite 2 game engine, is also in development.
