Bernard: Premium App Store DLC is “raping” the consumer
Outspoken developer Luc Bernard’s popped up again, this time saying paid DLC for games on the App Store can be likened to “rape”. Don’t go changing, Luc.
“We could have made the online portion of the game an in-app micro transaction but I think that would be raping the customer,” Bernard told PocketGamer, talking of his recent iPhone Mecho Wars title.
“I honestly don’t believe in paid-for DLC on the App Store. Most of the top games are 99 cents games so the average iPhone customer is obviously not willing to spend a lot of cash on games. To be honest, I would rather have a fresh new experience than loads of additional content.”
The paid DLC option was added in the latest iThing firmware release. More through there.

Mecho Wars gets massive free update for iPhone

Luc Bernard’s Mecho Wars on iPhone got a massive free update to the game yesterday.
The patch for the real-time strategy game adds info tiles for each piece that can be brought up by tapping on a character, which in turn tells gamers the movements, attack range, strengths, and weaknesses of other unit classes.
Two maps were also included for the story-free challenge mode, which you can only access once the game has been beaten, along with a new single-player campaign played from the Landian point of view.

Check out the artwork for Luc Bernard’s SteamPirates

Pre-production artwork for Luc Bernard’s new iPhone game SteamPirates has surfaced over on D’toid and it looks rather nice.
Most information on the game, as well as the title, is tentative at this point but it’s expected to be a high-seas RPG adventure.
This time around though, Luc took a break as concept artist and let his friend David do the artwork.
“I look after all the concept art for the Mecho franchise. I can’t do everything so I have my friend David help me,” he wrote on his Facebook page.
“On SteamPirates, I took a break as concept artist. I’m just art director on it. I just gave the ideas for the designs of the characters and some concept art bits (like the pirate queen skeleton character), but the ships for example are all from David’s mind.”
Luc’s first iPhone game, Mecho Wars, has done rather well and although there is no date yet, it’s expected to hit WiiWare and DSiWare sometime in the near future.

Luc Bernard: “I won’t be continuing in videogames” [update]
Update: Luc’s just updated the post to say the following:
I wrote something here and then realised everyone has posted a news about it, and right now I am slapping my head, wondering like what the fuck have I done again, so basically if you’re here you already know what I wrote
fucking shit
And yes I AM STILL SUPPORTING EC PC AND I WILL BE DOING THAT FOR A LONNGGGG TIME, AND EC WIIWARE IS STILL COMING OUT
Just no more future games that’s all.
Phew god, what have I done or said again, I am quite embarrassed right now, especially i never knew big sites would report this
Luc Bernard, creator of PC and WiiWare title Eterny’s Child, has announced on his blog that he will no longer be “continuing in videogames.”
“This is basically a blog post to announce that I won’t be continuing in videogames,” he wrote.
“I’m going to finish off Eternity’s Child chapter 2 and 3 and the Wiiware one (which should probably come end end 2008).”
The developer blames the (bad) press for making him ill and becoming an alcoholic.
“There is probably several reasons for me leaving this industry,” he added. “The press can really destroy you morally, too much stress (kind of made me ill and become an alcoholic).”

Luc Bernard has hissy fit over Destructoid’s Eternity’s Child review
According to this Destructoid piece, Eternity’s Child developer Luc Bernard has decided to remove the site’s robotic mascot from his game after it posted a review that chose to “kind of call Eternity’s Child the worst game ever made and then everyone said ‘Fuck you Luc,’ when he called our reviewers unprofessional.”
Bernard went a bit postal in the review’s comments after the 1/10 score was published, and the removal of Mr Destructoid from the platformer is described in that story as a “a bitter attempt at a cheap shot.”

Eternity’s Child hits Steam
As you can see here, Luc Bernard’s Eternity’s Child is now available on Steam for the unignorable price of $4.49.
The arty 2D platformer is a contemporary fable on the dangers of global warming, and has Steam-only levels, apparently.
It’s Sunday. Buy it.

WiiWare platformer Eternity’s Child Europe-exclusive?
Speaking with WiiWare World, Eternity’s Child designer Luc Bernard expressed doubt as to whether his game would be released in America.
“Eternity’s Child is currently only coming out in Europe on WiiWare for the moment,” he said. “Alten8 (publisher) have the WiiWare version and it’s their decision when or where to release it, and from what I know Europe is their priority. At this point I think Eternity’s Child Wiiware might come out in Europe at the end of Q3, but I don’t control when or where it comes out.”
The game’s art style is jaw-dropping, so we hope Eternity’s Child reaches as far around the globe as possible. However, it also looks as though it will live it up to its name (the “Eternity” part, not the “Child” part) – which is a bad thing, in this case.

Luc Bernard doesn’t want to “live off noodles”
Developer Luc Bernard isn’t happy with platformer Eternity’s Child, but hopes he’ll achieve enough success with it to keep the wolf from the door for a while yet.
“To be honest, I am not satisfied with Eternity’s Child,” he said in this Konsolifin interview. “I hope that is does well enough for me to be able to do the game of my dreams and not live off noodles.”
There’s still no date placed on the game – which is set on a future earth ravaged by global warming – but some impressions popped up yesterday. So have a look.
Thanks, GoNintendo.

Eternity’s Child heads to Steam
Speaking on his Destructoid blog, indie developer Luc Bernard has confirmed that arthouse platformer Eternity’s Child will be released on Steam next month.
The game was originally supposed to be releasing on WiiWare, but apparently it’s now in the hands of Luc’s publisher as to whether that’s going to happen at all.
Eternity’s Child will cost $4.99 and will be updated often, Bernard promises “with new scenarios and worlds”.
Buy it. You really may as well.

Holocaust DS title is “to educate”, says Bernard
Speaking here, Luc Bernard, developer of DS title Imagination is the Only Escape, has defended the game’s setting saying its aim to to educate children about the Holocaust.
“It’s to educate children about awareness and racism,” he said. “There won’t be any violent scenes, the bottom screen just displays the reality of what happened – you can find that information in books.
“I hate World War II shooters. I think they are sick and disgusting. The war is not a game. That is why I did this title, to show kids what really happened during the war.”
News emerged this morning that Nintendo has no plans to publish the game in either the US or Europe, although Bernard is hopeful of an eventual release.
“Why can a game like Manhunt go on sale when it’s a murdering simulation, and a game like Imagination is the Only Escape – which has no violence and is about a young child trying to escape the horrors of war with his imagination – be banned? Tell me isn’t that messed up,” he said.

Nintendo Europe “scared” of DS Holocaust game, says creator, but he’s hopeful of release
Speaking here, Imagination is the Only Escape creator Luc Bernard has said that he’s heard Nintendo Europe is “scared” of the Holocaust-based game, but that he doesn’t think the company is trying to stop the game’s release despite this morning’s “no plans” comment.
“Well from what I was told, Nintendo Europe is also scared of it, but again I don’t think they are trying to block the game,” he said. “I think they are just scared that it has bad taste. That is why… I don’t think the game will be banned. Once I have time to talk to Nintendo myself and show them the game they will change their mind.
“Alten8 talks to [Nintendo] for me, however I will try and find a way to talk to Nintendo USA myself. I mean, I doubt they would want to ban a educational game that is non-violent, where to profits are going to help stop another genocide. This isn’t just about the war; this game [is] to try and teach children something so they don’t end up racist.
“I seriously don’t think Nintendo will ban the game once I get to show it to them. I think also the reason they were shocked is because Alten8 deals with Nintendo Europe and… they haven’t even talked to Nintendo Europe yet… I am currently developing the game no matter what people say, and I will let a lot of people test the game before I even consider it finished, it needs to be PERFECT or I won’t release it.”
Imagination is the Only Escape is based on the life of a young boy living in Eastern France at the time of the German occupation in WWII, who uses a fantasy world to escape the reality of the War.

Nintendo Europe blocks release of Barnard DS Holocaust title
Nintendo Europe has confirmed it has the same stance on releasing Holocaust-based DS game Imagination is the Only Escape as Nintendo US, telling videogaming247 that you’re unlikely to be playing it any time soon.
“There are no plans to bring this to Europe or the UK,” said a Nintendo spokesperson this morning.
The title is based on a the life of a boy living in Eastern France at the time of German occupation in WWII, who uses a fantasy world to escape the horrors of the War.
Nintendo US said overnight that “there are no plans for this game to be released for any Nintendo platforms in North America.”
Imagination is the Only Escape is being developed by Luc Bernard, the creator of upcoming hand drawn, fairy tale adventure Eternity’s Child for Wii and DS, which focuses on a world destroyed by global warming.
