Square Enix bans hundreds of FFXI players
Kotaku is reporting that Square Enix has banned hundreds of Final Fantasy XI players as an issue that allowed for the creation of multiple items was exploited.
“[Square Enix] discovered an issue that allowed players to create multiple items for certain treasures and rewards in areas such as Salvage and Assault by exploiting the game system,” said the company today.
Apparently the bug has been known about for some time and was fixed in November last year. However Square Enix wanted to single out those who carried on exploiting the MMORPG’s system after knowledge of the workaround was made public.
“As a result of the investigation, approximately 400 players were temporarily suspended based on evidence gathered,” Square Enix stated.
“Approximately 550 players who committed more serious misconduct had their accounts banned.”
Ouch.

EGM rumours Square MMO reveal for E3 2009
The January issue of EGM’s said the “scuttlebutt around the industry” is claiming that Square will reveal a “follow-up” to FFXI at E3 next year.
There’s a scan of the mag page here.
Apparently the MMO will co-exist with FFXI, and not replace it. There’s a quote there from producer Hiromichi Tanaka saying as much.
Take a look.

Square pulls back time it takes to kill FFXI mega-bosses
Following news that a Final Fantasy XI guild had to back out of a battle with game boss Pandemonium Warden after 18 hours and physical sickness from players, Square Enix has admitted the challenge may be a little overboard.
“Included in the version update scheduled for early September will be modifications to the degree of difficulty of Pandemonium Warden (and associated pets), Absolute Virtue (and associated pets), and Jailer of Love,” said the company on the official FFXI site.
“The aim of these changes is to create battles where a decisive outcome may be reached within a shorter period of time.”
While sensible, we can’t help being a little disappointed. Are you lamenting the climb down? Are you harder than hardcore? Email us and whinge.
Thanks, Kotaku.

18 hours of combat not enough to topple FFXI mega-boss
Awesome. According to this PetFoodAlpha post, a Final Fantasy XI guild went up against one of the big bosses in the MMO last week and had to quit after fighting constantly for 18 hours.
The baddie, Pandemonium Warden, apparently changed form 20 times during the battle, which left players literally passing out and vomiting with exhaustion.
Lightweights, clearly. More through the link. Thanks, Kotaku.
