Gero Blaster is a new title in the works from Cave Story’s Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya, who showed off the game at BitSummit in Japan this weekend. The side-scrolling shooter has players donning the persona of Kaeru, a frog, who is trying to find his kidnapped girlfriend. According to information gleaned by Nintendo Life, Nicalis will publish the iOS title, which looks to also be heading to 3DS. A release date wasn’t provided. Nicalis’ Tyrone Rodriguez has said Cave Story+ will be heading to 3DS eShop within the next month or so. Rodriguez told Destructoid would be separate from Cave Story 3D and not an update, meaning past purchasers of 3D will have to purchase +. He further teased upcoming updates for the Steam version, noting: “How do online leaderboards for the challenges sound?”

Nicalis has confirmed that Cave Story for DSiWare has been delayed. The developer said on its Twitter in response to a fan that it went to certification, but that it failed to pass it “for some really minor crap with the manual.” It was noted that recertification would be attempted later on this month. The DSiWare version of the action-adventure sidescrolling RPG was announced two years ago.

Cave Story+ is out now on Steam, and for the first week it can be yours at $8.50 – 15% off. Thew version offers upgraded and original options for both sound and visuals, seven new gameplay modes, controller support and promised future content updates.

Cave Story is also available on DSiWare, WiiWare, and for the 3DS. The Metroidvania style game was originally released for PC and is considered a modern indie classic.

NIS America has announced it’s to bring over Cave Story 3D to Europe this summer for 3DS. An exact date wasn’t confirmed, though. It comes as a US release date was announced yesterday as June 28. The platformer launched on PC back in 2004 before making its way to WiiWare and DSiWare, the latter version having not launched in Europe.

On Shacknews. The WiiWare game – announced during last week’s round of Nintendo Media Summits – is releasing later this year, although no one seems to know when. See pretty pictures in the meantime.

According to this Joystiq report, Nintendo’s confirmed that “Japanese freeware cult-classic” Cave Story is to release in the US on WiiWare this year. From the piece:

But it’s not just a straight port, oh no. The indie Metroidvania title will have “new, exclusive content and features created only for the WiiWare version.” No word on what those are, what Cave Story will cost or, really, when “this holiday season” it’ll be available to play. But, hey, if you’ve got a “computer” at home, you can play it today. Without waiting. Or paying “money.”
