Your buddies can't help you with Far Cry 4's single player missions

Far Cry 4's drop-in, drop-out multiplayer will be rewarding for both players, but won't help you progress in the single-player game.

Yesterday, Ubisoft confirmed that Far Cry 4's two-player co-op, Guns for Hire, won't take place in a separate mode, but seamlessly within the same sandbox as single-player.

Both players will receive experience and other rewards as they play along, and side activities like unlocking outposts will be available - but everything else will go on hold.

Speaking to PC Gamer, director Alex Hutchinson said all single-player progress will essentially go on hold while co-op is in progress.

Don't forget that you can play Far Cry 4 co-op with PSN friends who don't even own the game.

Elsewhere in the interview, Hutchinson said that Ubisoft has worked hard to make the game a little more realistic. Side activities will be embedded in the world's narrative rather than just dangling off it, and AI - including animals - can now use many of the same traversal abilities as the player, so no more sniping from rooftops without fear, or shooting down at tigers form small rocks.

However, some of the popular, crazier elements of Far Cry 3 will return; thematically similar scenes to the drug use sections of Far Cry 3 will be included. This time, Huitchinson said, they'll have gameplay in them rather than be passive cutscenes or walking sequences.

Far Cry 4 hits PC, PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One in November.
