It'll cost you $220 to expand Xbox Series X/S storage
As expected, we'll be paying a premium to upgrade storage on Xbox Series X/S.
Since shortly after the reveal of Xbox Series X, Microsoft has been very clear on how owners will be able to expand the console's storage. The company later revealed that the same method is also being used on Xbox Series S.
Microsoft teamed up with Seagate to create proprietary expansion cards about the size of a flash drive. These Gen 4.0 PCIe SSDs have the same speed and throughout as the internal drives, and they are necessary for next-gen games.
Today, for the first time, we get to actually find out how much they're going to cost - and they're expensive. Only Best Buy in the US has them up for pre-order. There's only the 1TB version, available for $220, nearly 45% the price of Xbox Series X, and about 75% of the price of Series S.
This isn't surprising, of course. A cursory look at Gen 4 NVMe SSDs on Amazon shows that the cutting-edge SSD drivers are as expensive as they are harder to find. You only have one choice here, of course, which does limit your options. It also means their prices may not drop as quickly as you'd hope given that there's no competition - unless Microsoft makes it possible for other manufactures to offer Xbox expansion cards down the line.
Best Buy has the expansion cards listed for a November 10 release, so they're going to be available alongside Xbox Series X and Series S at launch.
