The name of the next-gen Xbox is actually just Xbox

As some may have already guessed, Microsoft is indeed trying to get rid of distinct console names.

The unveiling of Xbox Series X as the official name for Microsoft's next-generation console left many confused as to what the name actually was. It turns out, there is actually some basis for that confusion.

For the longest time, console manufacturers adopted a very specific naming scheme for their consoles that left no doubt as to which generation each was referring to. This ran in contrast to most other devices, such as Apple products, which instead relied on the year - or the moniker "the new" - to denote the latest model.

This is what Microsoft is doing with its next-generation console. A Microsoft representative confirmed to Business Insider that the console is just called Xbox. Series X, in this case, is the model, which the representative said is designed to allow for other models down the line.

"The name we're carrying forward to the next generation is simply Xbox," a Microsoft representative told the site. "And at The Game Awards you saw that name come to life through the Xbox Series X."

Although they specifically didn't say if a less powerful, more affordable model is in the works, it's clear that there's room for it in this particular naming convention. Perhaps it will even carry an S or E designation, though those were not confirmed.

Based on this, the generation after that may just continue using the same names. In 2027 or whatever, we may all be anticipating the new Xbox Series X.
