Xbox boss says virtual reality is "a really interesting area," Microsoft playing around with VR tech

Xbox One doesn't have a VR strategy yet, but that hasn't stopped Microsoft's Xbox boss Phil Spencer waxing lyrical about how interesting the concept is.

It follows reports that Microsoft paid $150 million for patents within the wearable technology field, which suggests that the firm is now formulating some form of VR strategy. You can see images of the patents through here.

Speaking with Fortune, Spencer said, "Virtual reality is a really interesting area, especially for games, and while it seems like it's been 'just over the horizon' for the last 20 years or so, I think we could finally start seeing it prove out soon for both gamers and developers.

"As I talked about at GDC, our Microsoft research team has been playing with virtual reality for quite a while, and while we don't have anything to officially announce, it's clearly an area people are excited about. The potential is definitely there."

There was nothing beyond that, but with Facebook buying Oculus for $2 billion, and Sony announcing Project Morpheus for PS4, it seems that VR could be the industry's next innovation arms race.
