XBL for original Xbox shut down could mean increase to friend cap

It's quite possible that the loss of support for the original Xbox on Xbox Live could signal an increase in the 100-friend cap on the service.

According to CVG, back in 2007, Microsoft attributed the friend cap to backwards compatibility issues with the old console.

"There's some interdependencies. Some things like original Xbox games have friends lists hard coded in, so there's things we gotta work through, but we'll get it figured out, it's something we want to do," was the reply from Aaron Greenberg way back when.

Now, since MS's closing that end of the service, it's quite possible it would allow for the cap to be increased.

Greenberg reiterated just last month that this was something Microsoft was still looking into correcting.

“Exactly when [a fix] happens I can’t say because there’s some technical requirements tied to it,” he said. “But I can tell you that, just like consumers, I share the same frustration and I, too, want more than 100 friends, and so know that we all want that and that we are working on getting that fixed”.

That would be grand news indeed for folks with loads of friends. We have, like, seven.
