Wolfenstein: The New Order reviews round up - all the scores here

Wolfenstein: The New Order's review embargo has lifted. What's the verdict on MachineGames' return to id Software's famous castle?

It doesn't look like The New Order has provoked any massively negative reactions, as we haven't seen a score below six yet. That said, there are a couple of those - but they're more than balanced out by a couple of nines and a cluster in the region of eight, too. In all, I'd say so far the response is pretty positive.

Reading over the articles linked below, as well as Dave's Wolfenstein: The New Order review, I get the feeling there are a couple of main criticisms. The graphics are fairly highly praised, but apparently there are a few glitchy moments that detract. Some critics wonder what place a single-player shooter has in this day and age - what fun are enormous explosions and head shots when nobody but you is around to see your mad skills?

The really major sticking point seems to be the tone. It's been many, many years since games were silly Nazi shooting festivals, and in the meantime we've come to expect complicated plotlines and characters - even if they're not always as high quality as we'd like. Bringing a property like Wolfenstein into this bright new future was always going to be difficult, as some fans will want a faithfully silly blaster and others will want a "mature" grimdark treatment. I suspect this is going be a pretty divisive title in that regard - which says nothing about the gameplay.

Anyway, peruse the critic opinions below and draw your own conclusions. All scores are out of ten except where otherwise stated, and as ever, we'd welcome your own contributions. Enjoy.
