Wolfenstein: The New Order easter egg lets you play classic Wolfenstein

Even video game characters dream of simpler times, apparently.

A few hours into The New Order, BJ Blazkowicz has a bit of a flashback nightmare to that time he had to escape from Castle Wolfenstein.

The video above, from Polygon, shows how to access the sequence, as well as what it looks like in action.

About a third of the way through the game, you'll find respite from the action in a safe house. Venture to the top floor, find the mattress in the far corner of the Tool Room, and take a nap to access BJ's tortured, pseudo-3D past.

Particularly cool is the way that it's the modern BJ's hands and weapons blasting away at the classic 2D sprites. The music alone sent me into similar nostalgic flashbacks, as did the weird way the bodies turn so they're always facing you as you walk past.

Wolfenstein: The New Order is out now on PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360.
