Wii U firmware update adds Amiibo support

Super Smash Bros. Wii U is almost upon us, so update your console in preparation for making the most of the fighter's Amiibo features.

A new Wii U system software update has been released, and its change list is pretty short and sweet:

  • Changes to System Settings:
    - amiibo Settings has been added to System Settings. amiibo Settings allows users to register an amiibo owner and nickname, delete data written to an amiibo by supported software, or reset an amiibo
  • Improvements to system stability and usability:
    - Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience

As a result of this system software update I have had to accept that Nintendo is so committed to the word "Amiibo" not having a capital letter despite being a proper noun that it will even start a sentence with a lower case "a" to enforce it. I defy you, Nintendo. I defy you forever.

Amiibo figures will be compatible with a range of Nintendo titles, starting with Super Smash Bros. Wii U and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. They'll also work with existing titles yrule Warriors, Mario Kart 8, and Nintendo is talking about extending the functionality to third party titles.

Thanks, Gematsu.
