Wii U firmware gets minor update, larger patch due by mid-October

Nintendo has released a relatively minor firmware revision for the Wii U, noting that a more substantial update is due in northern autumn.

Vooks reports the new update allows the Wii U to connect to the Nintendo Network periodically while in standby mode, downloading SpotPass data and system data.

The update also includes various stability and usability fixes which, as ever, go undetailed.

Interestingly, the patch notes include a reference to the second significant firmware update planned for this year, which is ecpected to speed up the Wii U's system performance and add substantial new features. The notes suggest this update is due sometime from late September to early October.
