What's Your Favorite PS1 Game?

COMMUNITY QUESTION | The original PlayStation was home to many great RPGs and more, what's your favorite to grace the console?

This article first appeared on USgamer, a partner publication of VG247. Some content, such as this article, has been migrated to VG247 for posterity after USgamer's closure - but it has not been edited or further vetted by the VG247 team.

It's been a rough week. Capcom Vancouver closed. Telltale Games suffered a "majority closure" today, laying off most of its staff and leaving 25 still employed. It's one of those weeks that feels very bleak for the industry.

So as a pick-me-up, let's talk about some good ol' nostalgia. With the PlayStation Classic recently announced, for this week's community question we ask: What's your favorite PS1 game? You can find our answers below, and here's our handy wishlist of what we hope appears on it.

Oof. A game system jam-packed with incredible RPGs, and you're asking me to choose my favorite. Ugh. Well, I suppose the sheer number of times I've played Final Fantasy VII means I'd have to make that my number-one pick. But then I remember that scene in Suikoden II where Jowy's friends wait for him to return after he's been captured by the Highland Army (the last touching moment the friends share before STUFF HAPPENS), and...

Yeah, going with Suikoden II.

I never owned a PlayStation 1 as a kid, but my cousin did and I went over to his house a lot when I was younger. Together we really only played one series and that was Crash Bandicoot. We would trade off the controller each time one of us died, but we were young and hungry for some Crash so we fought over the controller a lot too.

Actually, Crash Bandicoot was responsible for a lot of my fights I had with my cousin, so maybe it's actually my least favorite PS1 game?

I love PlayStation. I was a big PlayStation kid. The PS1 and PS2 were pretty pivotal for me growing up; the PS3 was the first console I bought with my own money (years late, but whatever). The PS1 was the console I grew up watching my mom play and only really played on my own later on, aside from demo discs that we got from Official PlayStation Magazine. So it's hard to choose a favorite PS1 game. My favorite Final Fantasy lives there, Final Fantasy IX, so I suppose that's up there with my favorite PS1 games.

Yet I'm gonna go with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. It's not the best Tony Hawk game—heck, it isn't even my favorite. But it was my introduction to the series, and maybe the coolest thing I'd ever seen as a kid. I got really into skateboarding culture (and sadly, not really skateboarding) as a result. The soundtrack is also among the very best, in my opinion. I mean c'mon, "You" by Bad Religion? That felt bad ass to hear in a video game.
