What is Elex?

Publisher Nordic Games has opened a countdown teaser site we're betting leads to a new Piranha Bytes game.

We don't have long to wait to find out what Nordic is teasing; the Elex teaser site is counting down to 2:00pm CET on July 2.

We can guess, though; as spotted by Reddit user phabeZ, Gothic and Risen developer Piranha Bytes is also teasing something. An image posted to the studio's Facebook page on June 30 contains the phrase "three days left" rendered in binary.

From other comments in the parent thread it seems the site used to contain an image that looked like Piranha Bytes' logo. There's only a black and white logo there now, though.

The blurry background image (see below) seems to show a warrior with a sword, which certainly fits with Piranha Bytes' previous games. Some fans have expressed hope that we're looking at a new Gothic or Risen sequel, but I suspect this is a new property called Elex, given that Deep Silver publisher both former series.

Both the Gothic and Risen series were modestly successful but didn't really live up to their own potential; here's hoping Nordic can help transform Piranha Bytes' ideas into a more polished product.

It's probably worth noting that Nordic Games inherited a pile of IPs from THQ.
