Watch two scenes from Romance of the Three Kingdoms 13's Hero Mode

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 13 introduces Hero Mode, an in-depth mode which also serves as a detailed tutorial to the main campaign. It's fleshed out with cutscenes focusing on specific characters and events, allowing even newcomers to understand the political turmoil and warfare of Three Kingdoms era China.

The trailer above shows off two of these cinematics the Oath of the Peach Garden and a scene from the Battle of Hulao Pass. Both give a bit of a glimpse at the early adventures of Lui Bei, who with his two sworn brothers (one of whom literally became a god of war) founded the kingdom of Shu. The classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms focuses on this kingdom, casting it in the light of virtuous defenders of the people. History is, of course, a little more complicated than that.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 13 is the latest in Koei Tecmo's lauded series of strategy titles, which has been sporadically localised for the last few entries. This new one, the first of this generation, was produced to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the series. It released in Japan earlier this year and releases in the west in July, for PC and PS4.
