Valve's VR SDK is "days away" from release, says Coomer

Valve's Greg Coomer has confirmed that the company's VR software development kit is just "days away." It is expected to release during Valve's Steam Dev Days event next week.

It follows the reveal of 13 manufacturers working on Valve's Steam Machines. We were at CES 2014 to try Valve's hardware. Get our impressions and pricing through the link. Finally, here's the official Steam Machines brochure in full.

Speaking with the BBC, Coomer told the site that Valve's SDK hopes to give developers a standard interface for VR hardware. It will hopefully release during the Steam Dev Days event January 14-15 in Seattle. Press are not invited.

While this will provide useful for those developing games for the Oculus Rift device, there's still the little matter of Valve's secret VR headset project.

Coomer added, "There's also technology in development at Valve based around head-tracking and headset manufacture and design. We are working with other companies right now but we have not made any specific announcements."

On Valve's interest in hardware and offering some rationale for the Steam Machines initiative, Coomer concluded, "Steam is in a unique position to be this intermediary between hardware and software and users. Without that its going to be hard for any device to get any serious traction."
