Valve laid off 13 staff in February, including some working on VR projects

Valve has let go of 13 of its full-time staff in February, some of whom are believed to have been working on a VR headset.

In November, a report indicated that Valve has been working on a VR headset made entirely internally. The report featured images of the prototype, and suggested the headset would launch early this year with a Half-Life VR game of some sort.

Valve hasn't officially announced any of this, of course, but the developer has now laid off several staff members, as well as some contracts, in February. According to a new UploadVR report, some of them were part of that hardware team.

Valve did not specifically comment on what their jobs were, though it did confirm the redundancies to the site in a statement.

"Last month, 13 full time employees were let go and a portion of our contractor agreements were terminated," said Valve.

"It’s an unfortunate part of business, but does not represent any major changes at the company. We thank those affected for their contribution and wish them well in future endeavours."

It's worth noting that Valve's job openings page still lists several positions in hardware, engineering, and more specifically VR. The fate of Valve's own VR headset remains unknown, as does the reported plans of the Hal-Life VR project.
