US gamer numbers have doubled since 2008

According to a new Parks report, the amount of Americans playing games for at least one hour per month has risen to 135 million from 56 million in 2008.

The rise has been attributed to the ascension of free-to-play and social markets, which have drawn new users in through phones and browsers, Gama reports.

The report estimates that that 18 percent of all US players download games through their phones, up from 7 percent in 2008.

Games are proving very popular on tablets: 71 percent of adult owners and 79 percent of teen owners used them for games for at least one hour per month.

A whopping 80 percent of American gamers now play either free-to-play online games or Facebook games.
