Unreal PT is almost identical to the P.T. demo - download it now on PC

Here's something for folks who were never able to play Hideo Kojima's P.T. or who deleted it from their PS4: Unreal PT.

Unreal PT is almost identical to the original P.T. demo released on PlayStation 4, and you can download it for free on PC.

You can thank Radius Gordello for Unreal PT, who remade the textures, models, animations and code from scratch. Some assets, though, were reused.

"Although I did set out to make all the assets from scratch, I felt it would have taken away from the authenticity of the whole experience if I recreated some of the more iconic ones: Lisa's, Norman's, and the baby's models, the baby's animations, the radio, and the pictures in the picture frames," said Gordello.

"In addition to this I also had to reuse the original sounds because I don't know much about audio creation myself."

The only things missing in Unreal PT, according to Ars Technica which played it, are the original P.T. intro and the demo's pre-rendered ending. Ars suggests folks new to the P.T. experience find a playthrough on YouTube after finishing UPT to see what wasn't included.

Speaking of videos, watch the one above from Anything Gaming to see the first 14 minutes of Unreal PT.

While it can be played with VR headsets, it's rather broken. Gordello admits there were issues on that end, as he didn't have access to VR equipment.

"What I learned about VR while making this project is that it's an extremely bad idea and very difficult to do when you don't have an actual headset yourself," he said. "Towards the end of development a very nice fella who goes by Tmcraig008 offered to help me and test it for me.

"The process was very difficult as our schedules and timezones did not match up very well and I had to be constantly fixing bugs and rebuilding/uploading new builds for him to test, but he is the reason the game is playable in VR."

Hideo Kojima’s cancelled Silent Hills started life as a teaser demo called P.T. on the PSN Store. When Kojima and Konami parted ways, the publisher pulled the demo from the store.

There is a silver lining of sorts: P.T. remains playable if you happened to download it to your console. If you erased it, well, you can always give Unreal PT a try.
